Previewing Rolling Stock Etc.

Post by fourletr »

As I am not familiar with all the rolling stock acronyms it would be helpful if I could see a picture of each item before using it in a scenario. Any suggestions?

On the UKTS library someone (sorry, forget who) created a set of photos of all the RS.com assets, which presumably includes rolling stock. A search there would probably bear fruit.

For the Freeware Packs, they all have a gallery of included items.

Hope this helps

Payware rolling-stock packs tend to come with a pdf file that will suit what you need. The UKTS freeware packs have a gallery on the site that shows the items each contains. At the end of the day, though, I tend to select an item from the list and put one on a line to take a look at its suitability. It's easy enough to delete anything you don't want for your train.

IDs for coaching stock can be quite counter-intuitive because several of the attributes they attempt to describe have the same starting letter. A few of the basics are:

B - brake
C - composite (i.e. contains first- and second-class accommodation)
K - corridor with compartments
O - open (no compartments, like modern stock)
F - first-class
S - second-class
T - tourist (to do with the seating density, I think)
R - restaurant
MB - miniature buffet

So BCK is a corridor brake with first- and second-class seating and FO is a non-corridor coach with all first-class seating, for example.

Thanks Keith, very helpful. A pity RSC couldn't have some sort of built in viewer like TRAINZ does (not that I like TRAINZ!!)

You're right that the way you select items from the list is not the greatest thing in the world. It would be better if RSC allowed sub-divisions so that freight stock could be separated from coaching stock but, I suppose, you'd then have a quandary about where to put non-passenger coaching stock like TPOs (Travelling Post Offices - another one for the list!), parcels or a brake with no seating - BG I think that one is. Given new flags would have to be applied to all the existing items of payware and freeware to make them compatible with such a change I don't see that happening.

There are similar algebraic equations when it comes to British DMUs but the meanings of some letters change. T becomes Trailer, for example. I have the Classes 101 and 111 from RSC and the manuals explain these nicely.

Hi all,
Just a quick point about the coach description codes mentioned:
FO is in fact an Open First class coach with through gangway connections. The non-corridor all First Class is an F.
In the 1950s one of the most common local all stations train makeups on the Midland Main Line was a 'Corridor three-set and S'. This consisted of a BSK, CK, BSK, and S. All ex LMS vehicles.

If you have RWTools you can also load something like 1900 thumbnails from UKTS file 27346 which show most things that are available. This is very helpful when you are not sure of the descriptions or the colours of the item you want to use,

Regards, John.

Thanks John, actually I stumbled across that file and have downloaded it. Not sure how or if it integrates with RW Tools which I have but I will do some more digging.

Not had much luck with Mike Simpson's RW_Tools for viewing, however, I use a Windows Explorer replacement called xplorer2 which is much more powerful than Windows Explorer and very useful. Amongst it's many innovations it has a "Preview window" built in and will preview just about any file including all the thumbnails. Using Win7 I can Alt/Tab from my scenario to xplorer2 and check the appearance of any item that's included in the 3 thumbnail files. Very fast and easy. Here's a link to xplorer2 free trial, try it, you'll love it. Usual disclaimers of course.

The lack of a preview feature has been a constant irritation since RS days, especially for route builders, as the asset lists fill up.

I guess it's somewhere on the "C" list at RSC, otherwise we would have seen the feature added by now?

With the latest version of RW_Tools from my site, all of the Thumbnails from my earlier packs can be placed into a single folder RW_Tools\Thumbnails and they can then be viewed from the RW_Tools asset editor by simply clicking on the item NAME column of the asset editor.

The thumbnails of locos also appear when you select an item in the scenario editor as under.

That must be an item that doesn't have a thumbnail - so you are seeing the texture file instead. Try some of the default items or the UKTrainsim Freeware, and you will see a thumbnail image.

No !! Still doesn't work. Even using same item that Mike used in his screen shot produces the same result as shown above. I have no idea what one is supposed to do. If I select View Assets I get a strange Green box at the top of the screen that does precisely nothing. Very disappointed. My way using xplorer2 is totally reliable, fast and with a very small footprint.
