With all the talk of a new route, or routes, being announced shortly by RSC, I often wondered do RSC take a look at the freeware market to see what's been released or what is very much WIP before deciding what to build?

For example, would they steer clear of East Anglia because Rich is all but done on his superb looking GEML?
It would make good business sense.

Hi, what we make now was discussed and agreed last year. What we make next year is behind discussed and agreed now. What happens with freeware locos, routes or even 3rd party party products not sold through steam has little or no influence on what we make because most of it was planned ages ago.
Also even with all good intentions many projects started by folks never get finished so it is never wise to plan around something that is not certain.

Really glad to hear that Derek. I'd hate to think that RSC would hold off on something because someone "might" be making a freeware or other payware version.

Derek makes some good and sensible points in his post in relation to the working side of RSC. However I would say that RSC do need to keep an eye open at what is going on in the Freeware Market because I am sure that quite a lot of Freeware does actually encourage people to buy the Sim and also if Routes are using Payware Assets this often means extra sales of DLC. Probably totally wrong but just my take on things.

I would love for a bit more info on plans to emerge, whether as a showcase or not. That said, I also agree that RSC should this year put as much effort into the core program as can be managed even if that impacts DLC. Indeed, I wrote to support recently saying so.

Bit hurt that when mentioning East Anglia, it's only GEML, how about Neil & I's Cambridge route ...

I agree with you James. But I also agree with competition. What worries me is if freeware developers give up their efforts if a company announces a route shortly after a freeware developer does. No need for that, we have seen fantastic freeware. In fact, most freeware routes are better than some payware ones!

Considering the amount of "work in progress" items posted on forums and RSCs facebook wall that never see the light of day, I'd say that is the best way to go about things....

what work in progress shot has been posted on facebook that has not seen the light of day?

(70 to come soon of course)
