Hi all, I did a quick search but can't find anything on the subject. What I'd like to know is, are there any alternative background sounds to replace the American bell sound while waiting for a scenario to load? Either that or just silence it altogether? I suppose I could just turn the volume down until it's finished, but I'd rather have something different, like English train sounds.

If you have an old back up from before TS2012 (your last RW2 one maybe), locate the folder Assets/Kuju/RailSimulatorCore/Audio and copy UI_FrontEndLoop.dav (a 13,377KB size file). Paste this file into the same location in your current installation and you will have the British loading sounds again.

Back up the one you are replacing first if you think you might want it again

I guess so, but I haven't tried. Interesting that the old sound and the new one have exactly the same size (13,377KB), might throw a spanner in the works if the size isn't the same.
I was thinking of making my own, there are lots of good free sound clips, some quite long, at http://www.steamsounds.org.uk/index.html
They are free, but covered by a creative commons licence, so if modified (change from MP3 to WAV to DAV) you would not be able to share them with the community.

If anyone has the RW2 sound file, would it be legit for them to upload it for the benefit of those who allowed it to be 'upgraded'? I rather liked the crows.

Well, it seems to work OK. I've got a recording of an 8F chuffing away merrily on the front screen at least. I've only let it loop once but nothing bad happened.

The biggest problem was finding some free software to convert from MP3 to Wav format. It seems that there's rather a lot of software that says it's free, only to either dump a spyware payload on your PC as part of the install or to sell you a licence once you have the product installed.

I found an old Open Source program that that did the trick, though some of the codecs it tried to install are not compatible with Win7 64bit.
As with all these things, at the very least create a restore point and/or have a backup to hand.
Anyway, I went for a program called MMConvert from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mmconve ... 0Beta%201/
Usual disclaimers apply, not my software, don't blame me if it kills your PC, steals your credit card details and runs off with your wife.

The steps are as you'd expect:
* Convert MP3 to WAV using MMConvert.

* Convert Wav to DAV using DavDecoder. Note the file dialogue boxes are not set up to convert to dav, I found it simpler to just copy + paste the filename. Tip: in Windows, Hold down SHIFT and Right click the file, select "Copy as path" from the menu, saves having to type it all in. Remember to remove the quotes from the start and end.

* Backup old UI_FrontEndLoop.DAV

* Drop in new UI_FontEndLoop.DAV

* Run Railworks and grin childishly as your ears are assailed with the sounds of your choice.

I'm off to do some more tinkering, I'll report back if I break something.

Short answer : No.

Longer answer : the upload would be rejected since the file is copyright of RSC.

I've just finished listening to a 49MB dav file, nine minutes long. Glad to report it worked fine.

I can't be sure, but I'd hazard a guess that the entire file is loaded into memory, so if you plan on doing something like Wagner's Ring Cycle, you may not have much room left for driving trains.

dBpoweramp is now up to version 14 (I think) and is no longer freeware but after 21 days (I think) reverts back to the freeware version. The link I posted was to the last fully free version I know of. Been using it for years, adds no junk to a system --other than optional entries in the right click context menu-- and it's so easy to use.

There is a Dav decoder here on UKTS,
but it converts Dav to Wav and back, not sure if it does mp3's

Thanks to everyone who answered my post, those bells were doing my head in That's a great taste in music you have there Shadders. I might try Siegfried's Funeral March as my start-up sound.
