Performance Issues

Post by TheJRB »

Hi all,

I've recently built (with the help of my father!) a machine with the following specifications:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory: 8.00 GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560

The game is running on a 90 GB SSD. Generally, the performance is great as you'd expect, but occasionally I'll see a 'jump' and around busy areas the Frame Rate really dips down to less than 25 sometimes. For a machine with these components, I'm rather surprised and I feel like I'm missing something or haven't done something right.

TSX is on but I've reduced the texture filtering to bilinear, but that didn't make much of a difference. In game, the settings are at the high preset.

Would using the FPS lock help at all? I'm just a little bit at a loss as to what to do...

Thank you,

Josh

Try lowering the shadows, they're a performance killer.
Have you worked through the excellent guide at http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=118677 ?

You sound like you are describing the 'Tile loading bug'. It is supposed to be fixed at some point very soon.

Hi

25 fps is OK but it probably looks worse if you have the shadows on. Turn the shadows completely off and that should make a big difference. FPS are not a reliable guide to performance as you can have 100 fps and still get dodgy graphics so follow the link given above and work towards a good all round performance and do not worry too much about fps unless they are getting well below about 25.

RS.com will be distributing a small update in the next week or so to fix some problems with AA, so watch out for this.

Try using the FPS limiter in the launch menu!

Yes, there is supposed to be another important patch arriving soon - maybe a week from now. According to the newsletter, this is supposed to include better multithreading support, which a Core i7 should definitely benefit from.

Will a AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.4 benefit? As you can see by my signiture my PC isn`t low spec but its finding it hard to stay above 30fps. Im debating on a graphics card upgrade!

I'm just guessing here, but anything with more than 2 cores should see some improvement. The situation is less obvious for 1- and 2-core machines.

Don't use any of the in-game AA or AF. Use FXAA, and you will see a massive improvement even with shadows full on.

What is described in the original post is pretty much what everyone who has the game experiences :)

How comes here the AF? It's not anti aliasing, it's texture filtering, so fxaa won't replace it.

Shadows seem to cause the biggest hit on performance as others have mentioned. I can manage with mine on medium and the the 60 fps lock on. Our Machines are very similar.
Kind regards James.

I`ve just done a little experiment using the WCML North route. I tested 5 different AA settings in the RW2012 launch menu, all with TSX on plus both Multi core and 30FPS lock options checked. Screen Resolution is at 1920x1080 full screen and texture filtering is at x8.

In game Options are....
Particle Density - Low
Pass Density - Low
Shader Quality - High
View Distance - Medium
Terrain Texture - Highest
Water Quality - Medium
Object Texture - Highest
Scenery - 10
Shadow Quality - Medium
All other check options were not enabled.

I used the free roam at Glasgow Central with the HST from platform 2

First settings were AA- None, then MLAA, MLAA+MSAAx4, MLAA+MSAAx8 and finaly SSAA 1x2.

Every option above gave the same FPS readings in game!

While at platform 2 i got 16-17fps, heading out over the bridge i was getting 19-21fps, at Eglinton St Jc/Larkfield Jc i reached 29fps, then dropping slighltly after but like i said all 5 AA settings give the same FPS!

My PC specs are below in my signiture but im sure something is holding my system back from performing as it should......... but what?

Hi Andy

I think you are concentrating too much on the frame rates. My own experiments showed that as long as frame rates did not fall below about 20-25 then the game still ran OK but effects of getting the AA right are more important. You do not need much more than 25fps when you get the graphics settings right.

I found that I could get 100 fps in TSX mode but the graphics were awful with so much distortion that it was headache inducing, but by changing the AA and filtering settings one by one, I was able to get quite a good screen and still get a good fps rate. In fact on my fairly good spec machine I got a great graphics performance with the AA and Filters set to the very lowest level.

There will be an update very soon from RS.com to address the AA issues so it might be a good idea to wait for this before making any final settings.
