That was hilarious!

This thread had become quite a nice general chat about railways in the US. Can't we get back to that? (Trying not to look at one person...)

@Jimmy: s'enough now, move on before you break the forum rules. if you haven't done so already. Your last post was reported, rightly so in my view.

My point is that RSC are going Americana presumably under the guidance of Paul Jackson and that this will mean the end of the RSC we know and love, a small close-knit UK company churning out UK content for UK enthusiasts like myself whilst having a laugh with their customers on UKTS forums. You may not be able to see it now, but it's the way of the world. When firms take off they don't stay the same.

If and when RSC break America there is no way that the big US gaming giants are going to sit back and say "Hey y'all, look at those Limey's in their little shack in Chatham making millions of dollars out of selling virtual trains to our folks over here, gawd darn if only we'd thought of that"!

RSC will be sold to a US firm or broken up in a blink if it takes off over there and Paul can count up the greenbacks!

Seriously though, they started it, the opening salvo was fired by an American!

I hope it does not stay the same, I want to do less work and earn more money.

Is that including or excluding Woodhead?

On the subject of the current focus on US products, I don't see a problem there. I have no real interest in US stuff, being firmly of a BR Blue persuasion, but it doesn't mean that I can't accept there are those who like them. Different strokes for different folks is fine with me. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff.

I said Next year, Woodhead is this year...
:)

I'd like to do a few Swiss/German/dutch routes too, not to mention some down under or something a bit more exotic, but we do have to grow the userbase in a few countries first to make it viable.
However just like the imortal words..

The Mount Washington Cog Railway!

Mmm. Swiss metre gauge with lofted mountain sides, that should be entertaining to build.
My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.

I think people could be getting worried about nothing here. I think RSC will still make UK stuff as it is easy for them to do the research on and there are examples of UK stuff they can visit that's not going to tie up a member of staff for too long where as going to visit US stuff means loseing 2 days due to flights before you've even started. Plus lets not forget companys like Oovee, Thompson, Just Trains, Mesh Tools and others who are working on UK stuff so if RSC do make stuff from the US there will still be some UK stuff being made. I don't think RSC will forget the UK and I look forward to seeing what the next showcase will offer.

jimmyshand wrote:Vern makes some interesting remarks about the number of rail enthusiasts in the US. How many are there? I've no real idea about rail enthusiast numbers not just in the US but around the world. I do however have a gut feeling that it's not that large. Taking the USA for example, how many people in the USA live within a few miles of a railway track? Maybe 10%? less? There are only a very few railroads in America and I'd bet there is a large percentage of the population that has never even seen a train let alone been on one! You could drive coast to coast in America across dozens of states and never see a train.
Compare that to the UK where almost 100% of the population live within a few miles of a railway track, 100% of the population have been on a train and many use them regularly. Virtually every inch of our country is criss-crossed by railways and always has been. This country is where railways began, they are steeped in our history and folklore and have been an everyday part of life for the entire country for generations. Go into a newsagent and there are about 50 different UK train magazines including dedicated steam mags still in the 21st century!! Go on the internet and there are about 5 million UK train enthusiast related websites!

A purely subjective observation but whenever I've travelled by train overseas, I've never once seen a spotter at a station, in the UK they're everywhere!!

How many train buffs are there in Australia? one? Transadelaide it seems!! I can't for the life of me imagine many Aussies hanging out at their local station! Peru? not likely. Khazakstan? doubt it!

I maybe wrong and I'm going on pure gut feeling, but if you want to sell train-sims then the UK has to be your number one place doesn't it? big population and surely a world-leading percentage of rail enthusiasts.
+100

There is not only strong apathy towards railroad culture in north America but downright contempt for rail fans (you can get beat up, harassed by cops! and sent to jail for taking pictures of trains!) ESPECIALLY in Canada where there is little regard for anything historic.. Just got done watching a UK documentary called 'Century of Trains' with the painter guy and am appalled by the amount of working steam engines you have! I've only seen one steam loco on display in front of the Steam Whistle brewery downtown (which is located in a former roundhouse). There is a short heritage railway in Uxbridge, ON running some ALCO locos but that's it for the local area. I'd have to go to Montreal to see more. The painter gentleman on the video made the best quote about Brits and how they are 'mad' about railways. He said no matter what the cost or no matter what bureaucrasies they'll still do whatever it takes to save their history. That attitude does NOT exists here (at least where I'm from).
