I would defintely recommend Joe Whittakers excellent Blythe and Tyne route. As far as i can remember it only needs a few freeware files to download and your up and running. The other one might be the free "Port Road" found on the steam DLC page.Hope i got that right
In a general answer to the OP, I was under the impression that creators needed another route to get started on whatever they planned to build, correct me if I'm wrong please someone, but, unlike Trainz, whereby you get a blank baseboard and start from scratch, Railworks doesn't have those, so, one needs to use a route as a sort of blank canvass upon which they then form there own layouts. When Rail Simulator was first released the IOW layout seemed to be a lot of people's choice to get started and so it carried on, unfortunately, it's one of the very first Payware routes that everyone chose, so, we've all had to chip in to obtain it to run countless others. Not the most ideal way for those who have a budget to play with, but, at the time, nobody really thought about it I wouldn't have imagined, however, as has already been stated, once you've got it, you can download countless others, so, say, for 25-30 quid you get an extra 30+ routes, which works out at quite a good deal in the long run.

If I may.
It is essentially the same as how you described Trainz because there is a default template (blank baseboard) from which you can build a route. You can then also use a template from any of the default routes provided or alternatively, you can create your own template. You don't need another route to enable you to start your own.
You get back in your box, Mr 26! No defecting to the Great Way Round until I'm happily puffing between Penrith and Keswick. And it'll be gruel and water for you unless you promise to extend over Stainmore...

Fear not... CKPR is very close.... Well after I've flashed the bios so the new chip works faster than an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping.
I did say I'd do Stainmore, but someone had better make me an Ivatt 4 and a Standard 3 Suppose that needs to include Tebay to KS East too!

Well, I stand extremely corrected then, young Darren, thank you for that, you learn something new everyday on this job.
I managed to get Raiworks 2 running but it automaticly went and updated it's self to 2012,but seems run ok no stuttering like MSTS used to do,it has set it self to medium, i quite like it and as Just Trains are discounting there addons I bought the Isle of White which includes a class 66 as well, although it seems a strange loco for that route.
thanks every one for your help and advice

They are actually two completely separate packs which are sold by JT as a combo deal, kind of like saying would you like fries with that? If you get them through Steam they come separately, although the Class 66 includes extra UK wagons that were originally sold separately by RSDL.
