Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
I'm messing around with the graphics settings at the moment and the biggest performance hit seems to be shadows and I currently use a nvidia GTX 460 with 1gig of ram on it. Noticable performance boost if you set it to low and off, I can run supersampler AA up to 2x2 just fine though all AA settings seem to not be actually applying AA as the edges are still jagged for some reason.
Trial and error with the graphics settings seems to be a required to strike a correct balance which looks good while maintaining a decent enough FPS to not slaughter the gaming experience, possible the graphics engine still needs some tweaks in the shadow department and a few others but its certainly working alright for the most part.

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
Have you got good frame rates?
just tested and am getting around 14 fps on medium settings on both launcher and in game that what you mean by good?
Railworks never reports less than 14 fps. Does it look like a slideshow? Does it take 20 mins to run 10 mins of game time?
no it actually seems to be giving a better frame rate than that in that the in game clock reports about 11 mins for ten real mins

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
Whoops i've found the GPU hog (and the bugged feature). The shadows.
Everything on lowest setting, shadows off: 120 fps
Set shadows to lowest or highest settings: same 30 fps
Everything on highest, shadows off: 115 fps
Set shadows on: 20 fps
BTW how shadows work and what they cause it resemples me to orbiter's early alpha stage opengl plugin with dynamic shadows support, which was really inefficient and caused serious slowdowns.
Anyway the performance of the new engine isn't better, but a bit worse (without shadows too). In overall looking at the graphics of ts2012 and looking at other games and how they run. TSX engine is very poorly optimized now, Openrails beats it into pulp...

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
Greetings,
Last night(this morning) when downloading the update, I ran out of cap at about 41%. Then got more internet cap today, and continued where I left off. Strange thing is, it started at 78%....
Now, seeing that it's still downloading, would it be advisable to delete the profile in the Nvida control panel for railworksproc2....? I've read somewhere that the game conflicts with the profile, so should I delete that profile, and use the game's settings?

Same route > Oxford-Paddington
With engine on > 40 fps
All on highest in game.
(medium in the launcher)
Without > 100 up to 130 fps.

Same with Haagen-Siegen.

Yea. ive been playing with shadows to. Seems like headlights are the same...
headlights off: 45fps on wcml,
headlights on: 15fps

Have you rebooted your PC since TS2012 installed? This seems to stop the repeated .net Framework installation for some.SouthernElectric wrote:I'm getting this to Theo which is slowing my access to the game if you come out and restart ittheokus wrote:The Microsoft .net Framework is intstalling over and over again....![]()

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
If you think about what headlights and shadows are doing, I guess it's no real wonder they are draining performance... you're all talking 15-20fps to do full real time lighting and shadowing... something that not *too* long ago was 30 minutes per frame
I'm sure it will improve particularly now that the folks at RSC are getting much wider feedback from the user base about what's working well in various systems and what isn't.
If you want to capture FPS accurately (and below 14) then you're better off using another tool like FRAPS btw.
Matt.

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
Lads, if you're having problems with TSX...TURN SHADOWS OFF.
If it's doing ok for me with intel integrated graphics, you'll do far better :p. Thanks for the tip, guys!

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
I'm going to also confirm what others are saying now after doing a few more test runs and adjusting other settings, shadows off brings performance right up, even on high end graphics card like I have got, I'm not going to say "shadows is broken" but more along the lines it needs to be optimised more to not cause a performance hit which it seems to be doing, the difference in FPS for me personally with shadows off and on is about a 30-35fps difference so I think thats the most likely culprit, shame really as the shadows do bring it to life.

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
It is a surprise. Just watch Openrails it have realtime shadows, with lightning since months, and it's performance is great. And it's written completely in .net which is a virtual machine language(which is usually slower than native code), but the core of railworks is native. Or watch other games with realtime shadows. There are plenty of them and those don't kills the computers. Realtime shadowing and lightning is a common thing in gaming, it's only new for train sims.NeutronIC wrote:If you think about what headlights and shadows are doing, I guess it's no real wonder they are draining performance... you're all talking 15-20fps to do full real time lighting and shadowing... something that not *too* long ago was 30 minutes per frame

Re: Train Simulator 2012 (Part 2)
I've found that I was able to turn shadows on - though not to the highest settings - with an 8800GT without much of a performance hit. But if you have "integrated" graphics of any kind, your mileage will definitely vary.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

What's the use of upgrading if you cann't use it.
I did read somewhere a few weeks ago that even low-end machines could use RW3.
(I am not talking of a Pentium 2 he)
