Re: Rail clack sound ?
Interesting to see the use of the word 'neglecting' concerning sounds. I agree. I've been banging on about the awful snare drum sound since day one of RS but still nothing changes, each new loco that comes out still has a backdrop soundtrack of rat-a-tat on the snare. The latest 67 and the 4Cig both feature it still.
How hard can it be to switch the track sounds to something more realistic? It's only a clickety-clack for crying out loud!! If they can introduce cab-sway and super-elevation then a mere clickety-clack should be childs play!
I can't stress enough how important it is that this gets sorted out. For me it ruins the whole experience. We have this wonderful new class 67 for example, looks great, engine idling sounds great, powering up sounds great then bang, tap, bang..... tap, bang, bang....... tap, tap, tap, bang..... that godforsaken snare drum starts up again AAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH make it stop!!

I seem to remember someone completely redoing the track sounds for the Class 101 for Railworks a few months ago.. it sounded bloody amazing! Proper rail joint sounds .. the works..
Though I cannot for the life of me find this video now though D: It's a real shame because it was brilliant..

I have to agree with the pro good sound lobby here, it is essential to really being immersed in the sim experience, when the ill fated msts2 was being developed they were asking potential byers for input, first thing I begged for was real track sounds, that unfortunately has gone bye the bye, I was disturbed though by a comment by one of RSC's devs several months ago (may have been longer) that sounds were not a priority!
Good job Oovee and AP disagree.

Re: Rail clack sound ?
I haven't bought many addons for RW since I refuse to pay for doing my hobby when MSTS was so free, and after being let down by the Class158 that I purchased for the PRO version only to find it never materialise.
I have shelled out on the IOW because I love tube stock and the only other thing I have purchased is AP's track sound pack for MK1's and 2's because I consider this a core improvement rather than an addon. What a difference it really makes and well worth the money. After watching his youtube vids on them, that convinced me, and I would whole heartedly recommend these. They make your simming experience completely different. Fantastic job. It's great standing on a platform and listening to a train of MK1's/2's departing, so much more realistic.

I'm rather surprised no-one has just make some new track joint sounds if they're that much of a bother. I don't know where they are ( I keep forgetting to find out ) but if there's some in a DLC somewhere that sound good, surely it's not terribly hard to replace the defaults with those?
Actually lets sort this out:
* Where are the default track sounds set up?
* If you have a favourite alternate, what DLC/download is it from?

I find that the rail joint sounds from the freeware "Chinese" wagon and coach soundpack are what a train on rails should sound like. If you could get that sound to also play inside and outside of the locomotive instead of the snare drum then we'd be pretty much home and dry.

You can replace the default BG_Modern and BG_Steam proxyxmls ( in Audio\Bogies ) with the ones from the Chinese pack - provided you copy the necessary files into the Kuju audio folder & alter the paths. However, while the chinese railjoint sound is pretty good at low speed, it really doesn't hold up at all at high speeds. I haven't bothered looking at inside sounds yet, they're all custom to each engine anyway.

Re: Rail clack sound ?
I've had a go at replacing the default sounds. Here's how I did it. It's a long process but I don't know of any quicker way.
In the folder Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\Audio\RailNetwork\Bogies there are files called R_JN_Clatter.dav and R_JN_Muted.dav each numbered from 01 to 10 making 20 files in total. Convert all 20 files to .wav using the DavDecoder program. Now open each file in an audio editor and make a note of the exact length of the recording in each clip. This is important otherwise the timing will be out if the new files are a different length. Next find some good sound recordings of track sounds - YouTube is a good place but ensure the clip you use has enough bass otherwise, as I found, they will sound more like a snare drum than the originals. Save each clip as a mono .wav 44khz Windows PCM file ensuring each of the 20 clipsis the same length as the originals as I described earlier. When this is done use the DavDecoder program to convert them back into .dav then replace the existing .dav files.

Or if you were kind enough you could copy the files you have already converted and upload them? Provided of course that that isn't a problem with copyright?Gatso wrote:I've had a go at replacing the default sounds. Here's how I did it. It's a long process but I don't know of any quicker way.

Re: Rail clack sound ?
Copyright is something that put me off uploading the files not to mention they sounded worse than the originals.smarty2 wrote:Or if you were kind enough you could copy the files you have already converted and upload them? In the end I couldn't find any decent footage on YouTube so I looked at the Class 31 Pack as that contains one of the best track joint sounds I've heard. The required file is called R_JN_TrackJoint1.dav which contains the sound of all three axles in one recording. As the default Kuju files contain each axle separately it is necessary to make ten separate files of each of the three axles in the original Class 31 file. These files then replace the ten R_JN_Muted files I mentioned in my last post remembering to make the sound clip the same length as the originals.
As I'm not prepared to put sounds from a Payware addon into the download library I'm going to demonstrate them in a video together with the default snare drum sounds for comparison. The blue and grey coaches at the start of the clip contain the modified Class 31 sounds and the blood and custard coaches contain the snare drum sounds.

Re: Rail clack sound ?
Thanks for that video - I now understand why people call it the "snare drum sound" ...

Re: Rail clack sound ?
Fair enough, might be worth asking RSC if they can do the mod for everybody as an update? Unless of course they are addressing the rail sounds in the upcoming update? Nicely done BTW.As I'm not prepared to put sounds from a Payware addon into the download library

Re: Rail clack sound ?
I'm definately in the ''the sounds have to be as near on'' corner. I contributed a lot to a post on here regarding the 4cig sounds and how aweful they were, and to my suprise i was joined by quite a number of people too. Like so many others, i purchased the sound pack from AP and the difference was incredible. My favourite train to drive is the 170, andi love the sounds it makes as it goes over points, but thats as far as it goes, dont even get me started on the ''in cab'' sounds with the track though, because to me it sounds like somebody is hammering on the back of the bulk head in the saloon.
