Station sounds

Could payware developers please include environmental sounds like station announcements? Will the upcoming NEC-route have such sounds? The recent Edinburgh-Glasgow Expansion Pack does already include it and to my opinion it adds so much to realism and railway atmosphere.

You could do them yourself. It isn't difficult, all it takes is a ProxyBin, ProxyXml & (preferably) a Wav file, that being the recording.

I have used this technique with the TPR route. Real recordings from the larger stations (Leeds, Doncaster, York etc). Basically a background "hub bub" looped and lasting a minute or two and then randomly triggered announcements and engine noises. etc.

I have tweaked and worked on them a lot to get the balance of variety and volume etc sounding right. Also applied AP style fades so as you approach the station (particularly a canopy section etc) the sounds fade up and then play at the same volume through out the main station area.

Works well and definitely adds realism.

A top tip is to edit the announcements to remove any time information from them. So rather than:
"The 8:30 Leeds to London KX service is delayed by 10 mins"
you have:
"The Leeds to London KX service is delayed by 10 mins"

With audacity or something similar it is quite easy and sounds good.

If I may ask a question on this topic as I am looking to make some station announcements, is there a setting or value to change the size of the audio cone? If that makes sense? Basicly how far the sound can be heard away from where you placed the sound object.

So for example a ticking NSE clock that if you move further away then 10 in game metres you can no longer hear it?

thanks for any assistance

Yes indeed. This is controlled by two methods:
Easiest is to use mono sounds and the attenuation start and end values in the blueprint editor
Harder way (but more realistic) is to use mono or stero sounds and apply a listenerdistancesquared fade to the sounds over distance. Much harder to do though and if you have not done sounds before then this will take a good while to get to grips with.

The wiki has some info on this:

Martin,

I tried your sounds. It works, but how can I make them louder? Can the volume be adjusted in the world editor?

Thank you,
Michael

It's actually quite simple to set up, was a while ago i did those sounds. i think i included the .xml if not convert the .bin and have a look, i think distance is changeable as is the volume. Just have a play about it's actually quite straight forward other than making sure the file is the correct type, i think i used http://uktrainsim.com/filelib-info.php? ... leid=18204 to get the right file types.
