Jersey Island Routes problem

Post by 0931330 »

Hi All
I have a real problem that i cant reconcile, I'm building the Jersey route in the 1940 / 45 area with the German occupation in full swing,
The eastern railway is 2' gauge and the Jersey Railway is 3' 6" gauge and the 2 railways never connected at St Helier, also the Germans abandoned the station at st Helier.
But the tracks come close to each other on the docks, maybe that's where the Germans may of made their connection, though i cant find any information on this

now the question is?
Do i reopen the old station and extend the Eastern Railway tracks and use one side of the old station platform, or do i leave then separate.

There are few records left after the Germans surrender, as most were destroyed, before we retook the islands, so i cant make the route as accurately as i would like, so there is a case to use poetic license.
I have track plans of a sort from books on the railways including the occupation, but they don't show any details on the German lines.
Regards
Ian

Well, you can stick strictly to the prototype, which can be very restrictive, or you can simulate what might have been and let your creativity run loose.
You will never please all of the people all of the time, so do what gives you most pleasure.
I would suggest sticking to the prototype in the first place, and then once that is finished and released, clone the route and start to use poetic license to produce a might have been.
If it increases opportunities for variety in running trains, why not stretch the imagination in creating a route?
regards Ted.

Hi,

The National Monument Record ( English Heritage ) may have vertical aerial reconnaissance photo's of the area you are interested in. The photo's available from this source are mainly from the RAF, but I think Luftwaffe photo's might be available as well. If the photo's aren't held by the NMR they may know who holds them.

Cheers

The decision for me would be whether I had any 3ft gauge track.

Whether you go for total accuracy would depend to me on whether being slightly inaccurate gives you much more "playability".

It's your route... entirely up to you!
