Class 86 noise

When driving the Class 86 I can't stand the awful noise made by the drive mechanism. Is there anyway I can turn this off (apart from turning the volume down!)
or are there any updated sound files that make this noise rather less intrusive? Otherwise I like the loco just can't stand the noise, I spend a lot of time coasting along with it in neutral to eliminate this racket.

It's the cooling fans; if you open the engine sound proxyxml file, then find "Motor Fan", and then set the BaseVolume to 0.5 it will cut the fan volume in half. You might want to alter the rheostatic braking fans too ( look for "Rheo" ).

There's a class 86 sound mod in the file library. dunno if this would fix your issue.

Thanks for that, couldn't find the Rheo but I am happy with lack of noise now....Cheers

For me the noise is part of the realism so turning it off would just make it seem unreal. Each to their own I guess.

The noise is still there so its still real.....if it were that loud in real life I doubt many could stand it!

It's my second favourite noise only to the cork coming out of a wine bottle

Anyone driven an old electric? wondering how much of that you can actually hear in the cab anyway. Most diesels seem to be rattles & traction motors...

I've been around Lime Street station a lot during the time these were in common use there. Externally, it's not an unpleasant sound even when it's amplified by the trainshed.
The blowers are however mounted internally, immediately inside the doors to the "engine room". Accordingly, they *might* be more audible from inside. Based on YouTube videos however, they are not so loud as to prevent conversation in the cab. The 1M44 video is exceptional in that the internal door was left open for effect.

It's a very prominent & noticable noise so to turn it off/down in my eyes is unrealistic...

The problem with relying on youtube is you have no idea what equipment was used - I think the 86 one there had a mic that self-adjusted it's recording level, notice if there's a noise in the cab the background gets a lot quieter? the 87 I've seen before, he had the inside cab door open iirc. Notice how the traction motors are at leas as loud as the fans though.

Also, everything sounds loud at Liverpool Lime St because of the sound bouncing around off the train shed and cutting walls

Hi
Once you reach the required speed put the reverser to neutral and let it coast. The main noise is air whistle which is quite realistic . Give it a try
