Unfortunately as the cylinders are hot when a loco comes to a rest the oil within the cylinders is thin and soon runs to the bottom of the bores, as soon as the regulator is opened the majority of the oil that should be protecting the cylinders gets blown straight out of the taps. It's something I witness often, a loco has just run round its train and coupled up, cylinders will stay plenty hot enough for condensation not to form in the 10-15 minutes before departure yet many open the taps and pull away for the first few revolutions of the wheels with them open thus losing that precious oil you are depending on to give long piston, ring and bore life.
you will find that most drivers are trained to open the drain cocks if the engine is going to be sitting around for more than 5 minutes to allow any steam entering the cylinders to escape. also the amount of oil lost though the drain cocks when the engine moves away is very little considering that before oil can enter the cylinders it must be mixed with steam and atomised to allow it to fit between the side of the piston head and the cylinder wall.

I just looked at the RS main page and noticed that the 56xx is no longer shown, I hope they have not come up with a problem.

Looks fanastic, but just a point...watching the tutorial video:
There should be no need to close the vacuum ejector before applying the brake to stop. This should remain open. If not, it means one can't regulate the brake to stop precisely and smoothly.
(I'll be buying this one...)

We had a long debate over what was the most realistic way for it to brake, and in fact althought he various systems are well known, its rather hard to tie down what 56xx had for the majority of its working life. There seem to have been some mods to mixed traffic and shunting locomotives which may or may not be applicable in this case. Any mistakes on this are my fault because I help set it up to perform like the Manor in MSTS, which is how most people suggest thats closest to how vacuum brakes perform. I gather there is some modification being done to how it was setup, so it may be rather more realistic than that, we shall have to see. From what ive read it sounds promising.
Suffice to say with the version I played, you could apply brake with the ejector on or off. Its just when its on, you lack much middle point between brakes on and off. So if you want the brakes to stick, shutting the ejector is the easy option.
As I say, that was the version I roadtested. Its probably improved on now.

Dont think so, I think it just drifted off the main page. Its still in the archive.

Thanks for the info. As you might imagine, with the ejector (& vacuum pump if fitted) running, the loco will be creating a vacuum and releasing the brake as soon as the handle is placed in the release position. As it is applied, it passes a "lap" position whereby the application can be held. Hope this helps!

I believe we should leave speculations and arguements about the cyclinder cocks either to another thread or to the 56xx is actually released then you can comment weather its wrong or not, also to note, the RS.com video was noted by Simon from RS.com that it had been labelled wrong so really, we don't need to go any further into that, its somewhat eclipsed anything to do with the 56xx now.

Thanks for that Kevin, Ill be honest and say ive not seen how the very latest version handles in this regard, but I seem to recall there was a sticking point between on and off, just a very small one.
If its not fixed (and thats arguably my fault if it is not) Ill try and work out how to making a bigger intermediate point, and post up a fix on the forum. In actual fact I think its something you might be able to fix in RW tools in a couple of minutes.
I might add, Pete has done all the work on this thing. I just helped him out a bit on the physics, so if its wrong you can all blame me!

Hm, I'm doing a somewhat raised eyebrow that there hasn't been any mention on RS.com website or facebook since early lastweek about the release when they noted it for the 2nd of June (a thursday

), normally there has been a post on the website saying "coming friday/thursday" but nothing. Suppose it is still early morning and they will post later, but its abit odd, especially with how quiet RS.com facebook page has been from there replies as of late.

I dont think there is any reason to be worried.

Sorry, my previous post got a bit mangled up although youu seem to have gained the main import! Looking forward to this - I'm sure any tweaks will only serve to improve a model that already seems to be raising the bar still further!

Ah well, should be a nice friday treat.

No problem, I got the gist of what you mean. Ive asked about this and get the impression the release version is broadly the same as that which I tested, albeit some scripting for brake pipe leaking, so functionality will probably remain the same as set up originally. That said, Im optimistic its a pretty quick fix in RW tools when it gets released. Ill have a prat around with it when it comes out and try to alter it.
I dont think its a really major problem as it stands, but its nice to get these things perfectly right.
Suffice to say if there is anything wrong that people can point to clear evidence of being wrong, im optimistic we can do something about it with an unofficial patch. Im sure people are going to complain about my traction v speed csv file.
