If it's steam you have to go for the NSW C38 class Pacific in streamlined form. 3801 double-headed with Flying Scotsman numerous times in 1988-89, was the first steam locomotive to travel the whole distance from Sydney to Perth and so far the only steam locomotive to travel in all mainland states of Australia.RSderek wrote:On top of that I am also thinking of my next big project, maybe a loco from Australia.
If you go for a diesel there are really way too many choices, and none that really stand out as obvious picks ahead of all the others. The NR class in current service might be interesting as they were the last locomotives ordered before privatisation of Australian National, and in subsequent private service with Pacific National they have had a large variety of different liveries, including some for hauling the legendary Indian Pacific and The Ghan transcontinental passenger trains. One of the red ones for The Ghan is named for Steve Irwin and has a large photo of him on the side!
