If you could have the motor sounds of the default RSC bolted onto the AP soundpack then it would be perfect in my book.

The RSC sounds are primarily ruined by the awful snare drum track sound which dominates. With the AP soundpack this is not noticeable and the track run sounds are far improved.
After watching many videos of class 421s as well as my experience of riding on them, I always found the motor to not be very prominent. I know how tempting it can be to increase the volume of certain sounds to make them sound more satisfying for what one wants to hear but I'd rather keep to what's realistic. I do seem to remember that an update was a made a week or two after the sound pack was released to increase the volume of the motors a bit so it might be worth re-downloading in case you have an old version?

If you do have the latest version though and you would like to hear the motor more, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\RSC\Class421Pack01\Audio\RailVehicles\Electric\Class421\MBS, find the file called 'MBS.proxyxml', open it in Notepad, find the sound named 'Motor' and change it's volume to 1.0 instead of the 0.6 it is now :).

Hope that helps!

The trick is that the 421's motors are under one of the intermediate cars - the one with the big Guard's compartment - not under the cabs. It is therefore relatively unlikely, if you choose a seat at random, that you will ride in the motored vehicle. The motors are also some distance from both of the cabs.

The PEP derivatives (507/508/31x) by contrast, have driving motor and intermediate trailer vehicles, and a 3-car set is not unusual. So there's almost a 2/3 chance that picking a random seat gets you in a motor vehicle, and the motors will tend to be audible in any cab. I almost always seemed to be able to see the emergency door to the cab area, meaning that I was in a motor vehicle, when riding a Merseyrail 507 set - probably due to boarding near the middle of a 6-car train - so I grew quite familiar with the classic EE507 sounds.

To put this into context, the Sm1 over here - of similar age to the 421 - has more powerful motors, being designed as an AC unit from the ground up, and is downright loud in the motor car - but the motor/transformer/auxiliary noises are completely muted in the adjacent trailer car.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

Here's hoping for a CEP (Class 411, which has the motor bogies under each of the cabs :D Pure growl right under your driving seat.

When I used to travel with my bike I was always in the Guard van, lots of noise and peace and quiet from the rest of the 'unwashed' :P  :) *Sigh* I miss the old slammers... :(

The units you mention don't have EE507 motors though!

Thanks Richard, I prefer it with the increase in the volume of the motor.

I have also reduced the volume of the AWS horn from 0.5 to 0.2 as it was making me jump :D

Is there a parameter for the power off pop/clunk which can be increased?

There sure is, just search for 'Power Handle Disengaged' :). It's at 0.5 at the moment so you can double the volume if you like by going to 1.0.

In MBS.proxyxml, I can't find any reference to "Motor" or a value of 0.6?

It's there all right, it's the second sound entry, after Idle.
