Odd Error in the Up Elizabethan Scenario.

Post by ed123 »

Hi all I've been getting an odd error message while playing the Up Elizabethan Scenario provided with JTs A4 Pack. What happens is that after passing through Durham I'm forced to stop the train due to a local passenger that is has stoped due to a slow freight that is cross over on to the main line. After the freight has passed the local is moved onto the slow line and heads to Ferryhill Juction. Now I alwasy pass this local at Ferryhill and after passing the points that connect the yard with the main line at the southern end of the yard I suddenly get a message that tells me that I've collided with an AI train and when I view the screen that gives the stats at the end of the scenario it show "Fatal Misstake: Hit Box". Now my question is how can I hit an AI train that isn't on my line and what in the world is a hit box?

Hit box - 3D shape associated with an object which registers a collision when another object with a hit box collides. Rolling stock usually has one, while many objects like houses do not, making for hilarious viewing if a house gets in the way of a derailment.

What I suspect is happening is that the collision is involving another service not related to yours. I do recall having to make a few modifications to some of the JT A4 scenarios (particularly to the AI freight services) to make them work reliably, so I will load up an unmodified copy of that one and see what happens. Be back in an hour or so :)

The problem is exactly as I suspected, a freight train leaving York Yard North has brutally rear-ended a stationary train not far ahead of it. I'm quite surprised that JT would make such a fundamental scenario creation error!

Note in the 2D map above that the train in front (07:10) and the train behind (09:45) have collided and various wagons are starting to spread all over the place.

The solution.

Go into the world editor and select scenario mode. If you move to the location where all this nonsense takes place you will find these trains in this arrangement:
Image
Using the consist select tool, shift the 07:10, 09:10 and 08:43 trains so they occupy York Yard North sidings 1, 3, and 4 with the stationary Yard train in 2. The reason to shift the 08:43 train is that it's normally in a position where it needs to reverse when it leaves, something that we can go without as we're trying to prevent problems by simplifying things.

In the 2D map it will now look like this...

Another change I made was to shift both of the A4 consists near the Doncaster portal backwards just enough to get the nose behind their signals so they no longer raise a "same signal block" error. You may still get this error for a couple of the trains at York Yard North, but that's not a problem as none of them need to reverse.

Finally, once getting it all sorted and tested I then used RW_Tools to swap in some other more powerful payware steam locomotives for many of the freight services so I could see more than just Black Fives on freight services. Some vans were also replaced by Blue Spot fish vans hauled by a black V2, and some of the coal trains look particularly good with an 8F on the front instead.

Note to hosts: to improve loading times for people with slow connections the 2D map screenshots are uploaded PNG files as they provide better detail and are actually smaller files than the equivalent JPG files. Good for 2D map diagrams but not for other in-game images from within the 3D world!

Looks like I have some editing to do and I'll send Just Trains an e-mail about this as there are probably others who get the same error.
