First up, thanks to Pete and Darren for getting the files available again, they're some really great work and it really doesn't matter where they're hosted as long as they're available
Just to put the discussion of the South Devon Banks disc to bed - the idea was to bundle a bunch of stock, scenarios and the route, plus all the required scenery together and make it available for people to install from a disc. Something to hand out (for free) at exhibitions too as currently we have nothing "extra" to give folks at the shows. I think when people see the price tag on the site they really don't take in to account that the site accounts for maybe half the total distribution of the CD's, where the other half is completely free at shows. Still, moving on, that's a long long discussion that far predates RailWorks and to be honest one I'm tired of having - if you like the CD's then great, if not, that's fine too.
The route itself on the disc was simply the latest version released by jetgriff.
SDB was being heavily delayed by my own commitments, but it was very nearly there, it just needed the scenario's to be done using the included stock (which included a couple of as-yet unreleased Digital Traction exclusives too, hopefully more news on them shortly).
When the "explosion" happened *more* than just Pete withdrew permissions and it devastated the disc, it was going to take a lot of time to try and fix (which I just don't have) and when fixed it wasn't going to be anywhere near as good as it was - so there was no point trying, project cancelled. I mostly expected this would be the likely outcome of the temporary bans that were issued, so it didn't come as a surprise. We can all argue and disagree about how the forum is run until the sun comes down but what happened, happened. I stand by the moderation decisions of *that* day but agree that I hadn't asked the moderators to be hard enough *prior* to that day and that's what brought us to that boiling point.
It's not the first CD to be cancelled, it probably won't be the last.
Does it *really* matter? Not really. Most people are installing things for RailWorks just fine, it's nowhere near as difficult to get things up and running as it was for MSTS where the CD's were exceptionally important. Do I think the CD's would work well with RailWorks? Yes, and furthermore I think it would seriously help sell RailWorks at the shows too. There is likely to be one disc coming at some point hopefully this year for another as-yet unreleased route (RobertM's outstanding Esthwaite), but other than that - it's not something i'm focusing on.
I firmly believe, and have always believed, that authors of work have the full rights to do as they wish with their work, so I bare no bad feelings towards Pete or the other people that withdrew their permissions, it's just another day in the life of the forums and best just to look forwards
So, anyway... moving on - go download Pete's files and enjoy
Matt.
