Converting a 3D model built in a generic modelling application is one thing, making the RW software read a folder full of files written in a specific way so that they could be be interpreted and put together on-screen by a specific piece of software is a completely different kettle of fish and I'd imagine it's pretty much impossible without an obscene amount of coding and changes to the core software. I can't really see backwards-compatibility with an abandoned piece of software that's more than a decade old being on RSC's priority list

There is no means or ever likely to be of converting routes between any of the sims. For starters, they all use different world projections and many early MSTS routes weren't laid out to strict prototype co-ordinates or used DEM terrain data, anyway. Some of the prep work might still be valid, if you've done an accurate marker file for MSTS in Google Earth, the same kml could be converted for RW, but that ain't going to build the route for you.

What about converting models from Trainz to RW? I saw some exellent stock for Trainz. Some that I would need for my next project I'm thinking about after I finish one of the current ones. My modelling skills are rubbish. I could convert some stock from Trainz 2009/2006 into RW. With permission of course! :D

You would need the source files and/or agreement of the original author. Reverse engineering is not generally possible and frowned on as a breach of author's copyright anyway.

There is a ton of good stuff for Trainz, including the Railsim UK collection of Mark One coaches, which are desperately needed in RW but as we have seen with MSTS to RW, many existing community members simply have zero interest in Railworks or converting their stuff. Been there, asked the question, got flamed, so put the idea back in the box.

Thanks for the reply. :) I will have to think of something else.

Hi ,

I find this post very interesting as a previous long time user of MSTS as i would love to have a particular loco converted from MSTS to RW3,

I keep reading this about the copyright to these models etc but lets face it some of these builders of these models have packed in/doing something else/not interested but shurely if the models were free and you at least mention the builder of the model then what harm can it do to convert the models and give them a new lease of life in RW3,

I am interested in an old model made a few years ago for MSTS back in 2004 from a team in Europe, i can't see at the moment contacting the builder but i will keep trying,

Perhaps someone who can convert these models could send me a PM rather than me cause any upset on the forum!

Thanks,

Roger.

If the original author(s) made a statement at the the time of release to the effect that you would be free to do what you want with the model, then no problem, aknowledging them would be a courtesy. UK copyright law mentions if the copyright owner can't be found or contacted, then treat that as permission is not granted.

Hi malkymackay,

Thanks for the reply,

I had also been thinking that maybe the models from MSTS would not be that good in RW3 anyway, more so the older ones and it would be better to make new models from scatch,

Its just me as i would really like to have had this loco i used to use in MSTS, i have gone back a few times to run it but i'm afraid after using RW3 its just not the same anymore :(

Never mind , i'll put it all out of my mind

Cheers,

Roger.

Hi,

Could you please help me to convert .s (MSTS binary shape files) to .3ds, I tried by using Shape Converter R4.1, but it only converts Unicode shape files. I made so many trials and experiments to convert binary .s (MSTS shape files) but I can't ....

Thanks
