Hi

That looks fine to me.

I am sure that there are many MSTS models that would look good in RW and perhaps your example will encourage a few more people to convert.

I think the thread heading should read 'Convert' instead of 'Concert' by the way.

How did you get the model into RW then without a blueprint :-?

This is a remarkable discovery. I had always thought it was not possible to convert MSTS Shape files to any 3D format. This little conversion program converts shape files to 3DS format in a very straightforward manner. Once in 3DS format it can be exported to RW. The video used 3D Max, but 3DS files can also be imported to 3DCrafter. You can add the various KUJU shadeers in the normal way and also add more detail to the model if desired. Obviously, unless you are the original owner, you cannot distribute the resulting RW assets but I presume that for those of us who have over the years accumulated large numbers of MSTS assets we can do the conversions and use them in our own installations. Well worth downloading the video to see how it can be done. I will be experimenting with this next week-end.

Many thanks, AnejTS for this information.

I couldn't resist trying. I installed the conversion programme, loaded an MSTS wagon file I picked at random and ran the conversion. It was converted to 3DS in a split second. I tried to import to 3DCrafter, but the program crashed. I then tried importing with 3D Canvas and this time it did work. However the faces were inverted but that was easily resolved. I still have to see if 3DC retained the original texture mapping. However, ieven if it does not, it should not be too difficult to re-texture with the original texture files.

I can see troubles ahead - shape file converters have been frowned upon in the past, because they make it so easy to infringe copyright. No problem if it is your model, or you have permission from the author, but will everyone be that scrupulous? I do hope so.

I hope I was clear. There can be no question of passing off as your own assets made by others and distributing them. But I do not see that there could be a problem making a conversion for one's own private use. I made quite a number of assets in the past for MSTS with GMAX (mainly for my MSTS Kerry Railways route) which I could never easily convert to 3DC for re-use in RailWorks. This converter makes this process very easy - and I have discovered that the texture information is retained and can easily be re-applied with the Material Manager Plug-in.

Hi,

Unfortunately the tutorial is no longer available on rapidshare (unfortunately they appear to only allow 10 downloads). Is there any chance you can upload it somewhere else?

Thanks - Mike

Hi BFM,

I have not used 3D Canvas for a long time, and could not work out how to fix the inverted faces. I could not find anything in the instructions on how to change these? Any help would be appreciated, I have a lot of models I made for MSTS but for which I no longer have the source files, and this would make it easier for me to convert them.

I might be missing the obvious but I can't see a way to download the shape converter. I went to the link given, and then to the download page, but couldn't find a link from there to download from. How's it done please?
