Everybody together now - all those diesels look the same... 8)

Perhaps LOOKS was the wrong word, perhaps I should have said IS.

As I posted earlier, the 111 is basically a 101 with more powerful engines. More than this though, the front end has been re-modelled to represent a late-build version with the full 4-character headcode box and destination blind lowered into the middle cab window.

A Derby Lightweight DMU would be a good addition as that ran on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith route, currently in development, and to which many of us are looking forward.

I am just wondering - is this also because some reports state that it was in part 'unfinished', missing station signs etc. Wondering how the bundled version of the route might compare to other versions.

Would the creator of the route like to comment?
Hi

First, this comment is my personal opinion and shouldn't be read as anything other than that

As far as I'm concerned the route is "finished" in the sense that I've got no plans to make any substantive alterations to it. Regarding station signs, Derek offered to create signs for the RB Challenge routes in his own time. He's a busy chap however and for a few routes, Granfield included, these didn't get made. I don't know if RS.com have added them to the version they are releasing, but in my opinion it's a fairly minor issue. They were also going to have a look at the signalling as well, as I think I'd managed some slightly funky link placements in a few locations, but again at this stage I don't know if any alterations have been made. If they have though I expect them to be more in the way of improved functionality than anything else.

RSC offered to host the route on Steam as a means of getting it to a wider audience than UKTS, for which I'm very grateful. They've chosen to include it in the 111 Expansion pack, in part at least, because they felt that take up of stand alone freebies like The Port Road wasn't as high as it could be. The intention has never been to provide two mutually exclusive versions of the route. Any queries regarding RSC's plans for the route should probably really be directed to their in-house team though.

Thanks for the interest

I will be satisfied if this 111 uses different sounds. I'm sure there will be as Derek had hinted on the blog...
Still need to swap the Leyland Engine for a Rolls-Royce one, so off to the engine shed for an update over the weekend.

Which raises an interesting question. Since there is only 1 surviving Class 111 vehicle & that's one of the buffet cars that also saw use with the Class 101, the only other class to use the 6-cyl 180bhp Rolls-Royce engine was the Class 110. IIRC, there are 2 sets surviving, so it could be possible that there are new sounds. I wouldn't bank on it though, as I don't think there would be much difference in the sound.

We did not record new sounds for the 111, it uses the 101 sounds.

The model did of course start out as the 101 that I modified.
This 2 car dmu is in with the 02 pack and 8F pack and we included a few new scenarios for the free Grandfield branch line.

I think it is a great little pack, now if you have the 101/02 and 8F and the Granfield line from UKTS you may think differently, however it is what it is.

Indeed, especially after you look at what Derek has posted. Hows that for transparency.

IT'S A CONSPIRACY! :shocked!:

It seems ok to me because I don't have the 8F or the 02, so it looks a nice way of getting the 8F with a bonus engine and 101 variant thrown in - which as extra stock for an engine DLC isn't bad going. If you've already got all the stock in it why would you even consider buying the DLC? doesn't matter what sort of value for money it is if you're not intending to get the contents anyway. Just look at it as a bundle deal with a bonus item.

Sure it'd be nice to have a different DMU, but the amount of work making a variant vs the amount of work to make a new model from scratch is so astronomical you can't really compare.
My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.

May I suggest that one of the reasons for the (apparent) lack of take up for the Port Road is that it only comes with a couple of free roam scenarios? The UKTS versions had something like a dozen scenarios all using default stock, and I'm really not sure why these weren't put in the Steam package. So for the user who does not use UTKS or create their own scenarios (and reaching this audience was presumably the point of putting it on Steam in the first place) there is nothing to do on this route. Not even any new (or old for that matter) DLC has had any scenarios using the route, so there is not much motivation for the casual user to download it, and anyone using UKTS (and probably already having the route) gains nothing from the Steam version.

I would have preferred the (Granfield) route itself to be a free download (like the Port Road), and then the 111 DLC pack could be a loco bundle with scenarios for the route, but this would also allow subsequent (or if we were really lucky old) DLC to also use the route for their scenarios.

I don't think even that is the problem Nigel. I actually believe the vast majority still don't even know it is there, at least for free anyway. Possibly the vast majority see Port Road listed on Steam and assume it is payware despite what information is easily obtainable.

Personally, I'd like it to be core but we than have issues of people complaining it's forced on them not to mention the extra work when updates are to be tested etc.
