Togglability is needed - either on the options screen or by multi presses of F4, or a spare key.
I was disappointed when the old F4 was completely scrapped and replaced by the HUD, when it could so easily have been kept as an option.

Colin

ps: Darpor - according to Wiki the word is "togglable": no "e" in the middle :)

I've never driven any kind of real loco at speed, so I'm not sure what happens to your ability to hear the alerter when you stick your head out of a side window at different speeds. Many steam loco cabs do not have a suitable view for driving (why not!? Some do), and so in those you just have to put your head out a lot of the time so you can see signals and platforms etc. I've noticed that some steam locos have a little wind deflector on the cab-side window. Was this common? Either way, in real life, putting your head out of the window at very high speed would presumeably - like in a car - stop you hearing very much at all except a loud wind noise, which doesn't happen in RW. So if the no alerter sound in head out view thing is to promote realism then it doesn't work.

Surely, in real life your ability to hear cab noises with your head out of the cab would diminish gradually as speed increased? Perhaps the cab side wind deflectors were there to help you hear the alerter?

If RW can model the doppler effect for lineside views then is it not possible also to vary alerter volume with speed in head out view, and/or to model wind noise much more accurately so that it gradually got louder?

That, presumeably (I don't actually know), would be more realistic?

Either way, the current arrangment is not really very satisfying.

Apologies to the moderators but it's relevant and I'll try and keep it sensored, delete if you need to

I was asking a friend last night if he knew how to sort this out manually and he informed me that a model has been released where the driver's default view was head just out of the cab with the alternative view being the standard in cab drivers view.
Now please don't discuss the newly released model in any way shape or form as I'm only using it as an example of what might be a solution

It seems to me a good idea to use those two views because, as I understand it, you can still hear the alerter with your head out the cab because it the default drivers view if you know what I mean.
For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it ;-)

And I have no idea why people keep posting "railsim team, any chance of a solution to this?". This is not the RSC steering board. This is an independent place to exchange thoughts on the game. Derek posted a million time that any input to RSC should be sent via email to them.
i'm sure you do quite a few things in life that people don't understand (and probably frustrate them) too!
i was under the impression that the team followed these forums too. sorry for typing!!!!!

Based on cab videos, it seems to often be loud enough *inside* the cab to make conversation difficult. I can't imagine you'd have more difficulty hearing the AWS with only one ear inside.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.
