Yes got to agree 100% there. Its a bit of a pain not having that. Simple but very useful.

Hi,
I think this thread will go a long way to finding a solution through constructive discussion. For me, and as others have said, grinding to a halt while in outside view is the most annoying thing and can not be avoided unless you stay 100% in the cab. Why?, because I do not want to use simple controls hence aws will function and I do not want to use f4 because I want a clear screen hence aws will function and I will not see it. Is this such a big problem?, not at all I love the simulator anyway but any reasonable solution around this will not disappoint.

sorry geoff - my comments were not aimed at you or the community, it was trying to work out why the developer team didn't just have it as an option rather than removing it all together, they can see some people want it and some don't, so logic would dictate to me that an option in the game would be the best solution. then users can choose for themselves.

From your posts over the last week, it would seem you are a seasoned RW(2) veteran!

I have already sort of stated my thoughts earlier in the thread, the visual alerter was not something I was a fan of and IIRC, it wasn't toggleable (new word? :D) The main reason was videos. If doing a video from a cab view, it would obviously be visible so wasn't ideal. However, I also like to drive from the outside sometimes, to admire scenery or just to have a change in environment so it then becomes a problem.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone could be appeased! Some don't want it at all, some want the sound and some want the visual. Lets not forget that the latter one caused absolute uproar when it was implemented yet when it was taken away, we had the exact same uproar, its an absolute no win situation whatever RSC do. A similar thing is the text size which was made smaller, albeit accidentally in the code, we had uproar over that and others that liked it. No doubt when its rectified, as is said will happen, it will then be too big for many.

precisely, which is why i suggested having the "option" of some of these new features that are being introduced, some are fantastic, some aren't everyone's cup of tea. people like to have a choice, thats all i'm saying.

I didn't like the warning icon for AWS. I wouldn't like it to come back.

BUT there is still a problem, because the AWS is not audible from the "head out of window" position which is necessary to drive many of the steam locos. This is a far cry from the helicopter chase view or the lineside camera - in the head-out view, you still have one ear literally inside the cab! This to hear an instrument which (IRL) is clearly audible in the passenger cabin of DMUs, if you are sufficiently near the front.

With that in mind, you can see where a lot of the moaning comes from.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

Precisely, especially when it all comes to a screeching halt!

so we are all agreed that an alerter sound OUTSIDE would be ideal, preferably to every type of loco and not just steam. The warning icon could still be an option, although if there was a clear audio there probably wouldn't be many people that would want the warning icon too, i'd be happy with just audio warning.

railsim team, any chance of a solution to this? a global audio warning for aws or vigilance alarms etc through the whole sim?

I think the only thing that would meet with near universal agreement is to have a far greater degree of customisation available for all aspects of the HUD, be that the F3, 4 or 5 version. I have no idea of the practicalities of implementing that however.

I fully agree with the potentially universal agreement to need customisation.

And I have no idea why people keep posting "railsim team, any chance of a solution to this?". This is not the RSC steering board. This is an independent place to exchange thoughts on the game. Derek posted a million time that any input to RSC should be sent via email to them.

At the moment the Sound adjustments in Options are limited to just two sliders.

Maybe introducing more sliders would enable a degree of "customisation"? A cruder alternative would be to make sounds switchable ON/OFF as with other aspects of the Sim?

Now in MSTS which I know most (and not that much) about this could be a simple custom "hack". Ideally it would be a core programme change but of course the development team have an agenda and a priority list no doubt.

I think what causes so much grief here is, as has been discussed on the Jan-Mar Review thread, those of us who run MSTS as well are not used to having any route other than DIY to change stuff. Those of you who only run RW can have no idea just how much the base programme has been modified by just such community hacks. For instance the On Screen Sisplays that you call a HUD were always switchable individually and were customised in several different ways to suit individual taste. The Bin Patch bought further mods too. The only real problem I can see with such DIY stuff here is that STEAM might overwrite them?

More customization would be nice in order that more users could be pleased (you'll never please everyone). RW can be hacked (and has been) just like Rail Simulator could be (and was). Interestingly though; while RS doesn't get updated so one's hacks would be permanent just like those of MSTS (in the sense it won't be overwritten), hardly anyone still uses RS (and I imagine even less use MSTS(?)) because RW is still currently supported and in development. I don't know of any sims that didn't need tweaking (or didn't get tweaked anyway) by users to be to their satisfaction. As was said; MSTS got tweaked a lot (obviously there was a lot to tweak), so the problem isn't just an RW related one. I would rather put up with some of the niggles and have a continually evolving and upgrading simulator than wring to death one which isn't going anywhere.

In my opinion the AWS audible alert(s) should be heard in 'Headout' Shift+2 views but not in views 2 & 3 (Front and rear chase cam), and in views 4 (tracking), 5 (in carriage), 6 (overhead), 7 & 8 (Birds eye / free cam) only a warning Icon should be deployed.
