Narrow Railway Cuttings (Opinions)

Okay, I need your opinions on some new Railway cuttings I have made.
At the ESR, they have very narrow Railway cuttings and due to the Railworks base grid (10meters, I think) this is not possible and I get very large cuttings, nothing like the ones at ESR. Here is an example of the ESR Railway:
With the base grid I managed this:
It's very large, I've tried to make it more narrow with trees, but it seems to look more like a forest.
This is what it looks like with a the new edge (seperate asset).
Here it is at another angle:
I just need opinions on should I keep it how it was, or shall I make it with more narrow cuttings?
Thank you 'pauls' for bring this to my attention!
Cheers,
Mike

Looks pretty good to me Mike. Hey Mike have you given up on the 350?

Looks fine Mike. The left hand side on the new ones look correct, and to me it is a mix on the right hand side bank of the cutting.

I prefer the base one, it's a good likeness to the photo. Lofts are a nice idea in theory but I just haven't seen one that looks right. The size of the mesh is such a frustration! Great work though, I don't think you'll get it much better.

I'd prefer the first one with using just the trees
The new one with the loft looks a bit light coloured to mix with trees. Have you tried the BarnsRS cuttings and embankments?
I think I found them over at RWtrainsim
http://rs-trainsim.co.uk/forums/index.p ... w;down=114
they have a darker cutting and might blend in and look a little less 'flat'

Phil

The Barnes cuttings are the way to go for narrow cuttings. I've had to use them a lot on the L&B!

If you want to be "lower Spec" friendly (i.e for users whom use Railworks on Laptops and suchlike) then lofts are the way to go with a few 'real' assets placed here and there. If you're wanting to cater to "higher end" Railworks users then go for seperate assets,
but be prepared for a lot of users complaining down the road that their systems can't handle the detail due to the amount of assets per tile and constant SBHH because of this.
I've managed to create small areas with over 3000 assets per tile, when the recommended is 2000. Ran okay on a middle spec computer, but had it been any more than the 3 or 4 tiles that I'd populated then I'm sure it would've been a problem..
Since it's your creation, go with what
you think looks best, as we all (well, most) know the deficiencies in regards to the terrain shaping tools provided.

Am I right in guessing that the cutting is through rock rather than soil? That would be the only way to have such a steep-sided cutting be stable.
With good-quality rock, you can even have (near) vertical walls, eg. Lime Street cutting.

I think lofts need to be used to create a narrow cutting or embankment, remember that the trees foliage are less dense in winter, so using them to create a narrowing effect will not be as effective in winter time.

Okay! Thanks for all your comments and opinions!
The cutting is rock base, so yes that’s why it is narrow! But I must say, a very over grown rock base! Winter textures are something I need to look into! I've also created different shaped lofts. So in the end I have used the lofts, but personally I do prefer the lofts, I have taken a screen shot of what I have done, still unfinished! You'll have to excuse the sky, it's a graphics error that occurs when Railworks get minimized.
There are still some things that need to be sorted out.
Thanks for your interest!
Cheers,
Mike

That's really good Mike - would you consider uploading it, as I'm having a similar problem creating a deep cutting that Wetherby station was in, and your loft there looks the closest I've seen to date, and boy have I looked through some lofts and assets!!!!
