Modified Payware Routes

Has RSC clarified its policy re uploading of modified payware routes? I have a resignalled, detailed and generally spruced-up GWR version of the Falmouth route that I'm looking to upload here, subject to permissions.

I would expect that without explicit permission (either case by case or as a policy) the answer would be no. We are yet to see a policy that explicitly grants permission to do that, and so it looks like your modified route will have to be for your enjoyment only.
You may like to contact RS.com directly to request permission rather than wait for a general policy to be released, which given it has not happened yet makes it unlikely.

I somehow doubt they will be very keen on the idea, but to get a formal answer it's probably the old cliche of "email support" to see what they say.

Hi
I guess its like a reskin, upload the changes but not the actual route.

I don't think it's that simple.

Interesting. The principle seems to me to be no different to a reskin, in that the new version would contain only the modified content files and require the original DLC installed in order to function. And now I think of it, we have a precedent: IoW Network is similarly a modified DLC route made available as freeware.

I was going to mention IOW, Newcastle/York modern, and a couple of Barstow/San Bernadino as well. Certainly worth looking at what they supplied in the downloads.

Perhaps you could get the user to create a clone of the Falmouth Route of a specific name and at a specific location and then your file can load just the changed files from your clone of the route into the user's clone of the route. The user's original route is untouched and will update normally if RS.com provide amendments via Steam but the cloned route will be regarded as the users route and not be altered.
This means that the user still has to have purchased the Falmouth route in order to make the clone from, so that should be OK.
The only thing I am not sure of is that some of the files will be amended versions of the original payware route and it may not be allowable to distribute these.
Just a thought, but these points need to be checked out thoroughly before doing anything.

Wouldn't the route guid number differ though, meaning that scenarios then couldn't be used across installs of the modified/improved route?

Hi
When I said
Specific Location I was thinking of the path to the file on the computer and not the origin location of the route

Hi,
Email Support and outline the work you have done and what you intend to upload to UKTS.
regards
Derek

I have emailed details to Support as requested. I don't know what previous modified routes have uploaded, but presumably the package would include the modified route Content and scenario files, plus bundled freeware assets where appropriate. The package would install as a separate route. Obviously the default route assets would not be included so the user would also need the default route to be installed.

I guess your version of the route will have to be dependant on the default route, or RSC will loose out on sales, which they will obviously not allow.

RSC have told me (thanks Derek) they have no firm policy on modified payware routes, but that they generally do not have an issue with it as long as the package contains only the bare minimum required, and that users need the original version to run the route. So subject to permissions from freeware authors I will look to upload my GWR version of the Falmouth Branch shortly.
Changes to default Version:
- Minor track layout corrections at Falmouth and Truro to conform more closely with prototype
- Route resignalled throughout using GWR lower quadrants and prototype signal diagrams so far as possible
- Added my own custom GWR station signs
- Added ash and inspection pits to Truro shed
- Added GWR signal boxes, lamps, adverts and other period station clutter throughout
- Added missing trackside fencing
- Minor terrain texturing and foliage enhancements
- Added embankment/track bed shapes throughout
- Amended selected default scenarios to use GWR rolling stock
Does any experienced scenario creator fancy a go at creating some custom GWR scenarios, with maybe a little beta testing thrown in? Hopefully I will be able to bundle in some GWR assets and rolling stock not recently available on UKTS.

This is great news and Im sure we will look forward to it. I regret at the moment I dont have time to try it, but if you want a copy of the 1932 Great Western Timetable for the line Ive already scanned if it would prove any help.
I would assume RSC wouldnt object to anyone uploading an extended S and D for the same reasons given? After all its not like you could play it without a copy of Railworks. Not that ive done such a thing, but im vaguely considering it after I put paid to Western Rails.
