To be honest, it is fair enough to leave structured comments, after all, that is what it is all about. However, you say you know nothing about who developed the product who happens to be an independent developer that relies generally on word of mouth to further sales which in turn help further development. Of course, the reasons are there, you pay your money and have expectations for the price you pay but at the same time, telling all and sundry to read what you post and include "...it is a bit of a rip off......" helps nobody as it is just a personal opinion but one that can have severely damaging effects.
You don't have to of course, but you could do a bit of research on the model and creator and even contact them privately if you have suggestions, he does have an openly available email address, it causes no harm to try.

Wouldnt you say that even though its a personal opinion, its not damaging? If he said, for example, downloading the 9F pack will make your computer explode!, would be damaging for the seller. Everyone is entitled to their opinion after all. And I actually like to read reviews of products before i part with my money and buy it. I have been severely disappointed on many occasions with railworks downloads, but its too late once youve downloaded it of course. I try and read peoples opinions and see videos before I buy, So I actually think that reading reviews such as this is quite helpful. It helps people to make their mind up about buying it or not.
I think your last bit about contacting him could be quite interesting, given some of the history of discussions in this forum

I've emailed sly numerous times and he has always been helpful with my questions and even went as so far as remapping one of his products twice so I could properly paint it. It is all in the approach.

Re: 92220 9F Payware add on
Model is very good, and that's the hard part. I hate the sounds personally - mostly because of the discordancy between the different exhausts - but they're easy to fix ( and happily awaiting newer ones ). As for activities... well RW needs more scenarios full stop, really. I'm much happier messing around with sounds & emitters & graphics, I lack the imagination for scenarios I'm afraid. Sly can have my money for nearly all his stuff, I don't feel ripped off.
What use would fitting ATC to the model be, when none of the routes actually have ATC

My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.

Do I think that it was a fair price to pay for the loco yes and I am very happy with it. I think we forget just how much work go's into building one. And there are many other builders who don’t have perfect loco's

@ John - agreed, if I could build to anything like as good a standard as some of the payware on RW, then I would be a happy bunny but I can't, and the cost of the professional software is scary even if I wanted to - the price is more than the cost of all the RW addons put together!!!
@ the OP - I am much happier as a consumer & I can make my own judgements on what I want to buy thank you!
I know there are some boffs out there that can do a brilliant job with the freeware stuff but I ain't one of them!

Wrong. AWS was beginning to appear well before the end of steam. And I'm not talking just about the ex-GWR ATC system. It's availability was far from widespread, and one certainly wouldn't see it on a 4F working a goods for eg. But certainly not just a modern preservation addition - in fact the current mainline fit is much more than just AWS, requiring full TPWS linked with OTMS. And....£££

That's interesting, Kev. Was there any systematic approach applied (e.g. BR Standards ahead of pre-nationalisation locos) or was it a more makeshift approach based on route allocation and maintenance schedules do you know?kevpotts wrote:FoggyMorning wrote:I didn't think steam locomotives were usually fitted with AWS gear, except for a few that have had it fitted in preservation to allow mainline running?

Re: 92220 9F Payware add on
It makes me ROFFL when I see folks type that Payware is a rip off, what, £15 for what could be 10 years usage, that's not a rip off, 'bout time you lot got your minds and ideaologies into perspective, I've just spent £40 paying a ONE MONTH mobile phone bill, now, that's what I call a damned rip off.....And it's gone now, nothing to show for it, unlike ALL of my Payware Railworks content.

If I read this thread again from the start would I be re-viewing it?
It's all down to the choice of language (as I hope the line above shows) and the style of writing, you have to know where critique ends and criticism begins. Writing reviews isn't easy, and every review is clouded by the reviewers personal opinion.

Actually no, but I'd be happy with even it's original wording preceded by something along the lines of 'this reviewer feels that....' or 'in my opinion....'pedanticmongrel wrote:okay then, would the substitution of the phrase; "is very expensive for what it is" sit better with you?

Well the only phrases I took away from the original review were:
I think reviewers should be a bit more responsible and not use such emotive language.
andrealises that the crew are on crack
If I didn't already own it, it would put me off buying it.t is a bit of a rip off

The 9F is one of my favourite steam locos and the only steam loco I drive from the cab.
