Hi,

I thought I'd take the forum's advice and recommendations on expanding my Railworks collection. I thought I'd like another diesel addition to my fleet, and was drawn to the IHH products. So, should I buy either the 56 or 45 addon?

Currently I can't choose between either, and then my budgeting sense kicks in to say 'buy neither'.

Assuming you have got the class 60s, I'd personally choose the peak pack, but that's just as they're multi use, whereas the 56 is a freight loco.

Kick the budgeting sense out of the window...buy both!!

Seriously, which of the 2 locos fills the time period/geographical area that interests you most?

I personally don't own the 45, yet, but I DO own the 56 and the sounds alone warrented the purchase, the 56 is a nice looking model, get both, get one now and the other later maybe if you REALLY can't decide, which ever you chose you won't be disapointed given how much I was impressed with the 56, have a look on YouTube or the IHH site at the videos.

I suppose I am really looking for a good quality model which I can use in scenario creation and swap into existing scenarios. I'm not too picky about era and happily drive scenarios from all eras. In a way, pan-era models can be a virtue

Good quality models, that narrows your choice down to..... hang on, they're all excellent models and doesn't make the choice any easier lol.

The 56 look good but the sounds are not very good.

Hello Alex,

I can't understand why you're asking for the communities assistance then, if you budgeting sense won't let you buy anything....

If you budgeted to a sensible degree over the months, you'd be able to buy both models, as they are equally excellent, and don't forget to download the various freebie patches from the left hand side of his website, especially, for the Class 56.
As computerware goes these days, both locomotives sound and look superb, as we are all different, some folks may not like the way they sound, go and watch the various videos on You Tube, and suchlike, and then personally decide.
Ask yourself one question, bearing in mind how long you are likely to play with Railworks for, but, are Sly's locomotives/content worth £15 each, or, less, for 3/4/5/6/7 years playability, you bet they are, these will last longer than the computer/laptop you play them on, all for £15 a piece, that's what I call value for money.

Personally I would go for the Class 45 pack over the 56, I think it's a nicer model and has better sounds, especially now all the variants are available.

However if you don't have the JT Class 20 pack or the Oovee 57, then I'd look at these too, I think the 57 is perhaps my favourite of all the diesel models currently available, a beautiful model with wonderful sounds and authentic control.

Ive not got the 56, but I can speak highly of the Peak. Ultimately it depends on what you want to do, passenger and freight, or just freight bumping. Redoubtable locomotive though the 56 was, I cant imagine it doing much passenger work outside of railtours.

Besides, a 45/46 is much prettier.

I would second the recommendation for the Oovee 57. I also have the IHH Class 45 and Class 20 (but not the JT Class 20 so can't comment on that) but the Oovee 57 is my clear favourite. I don't think you would be disappointed if you went with it as a first purchase. It's also certainly a good idea to keep an eye out for any sales and special offers; you may get lucky!

Agree the 57 is the best all round model made for Railworks. It looks much better than 47s, the sounds are amazing and lovely clag when you open her up

Thanks everyone. I think I'll get the 45s as I can't see anything bad said about them. I appreciate the idea of the 57s, but I'm not really looking for anything post-privatisation these days. I really just wanted to know if there was anything wrong with either one before I shelled out for one.

There is a thing about the windows being a bit dark tinted (a criticism given against the 56 at one time) but personally I dont have a problem with it. If you turn the detail down low it shows up at very small black spots on my graphics card. Turning it up (and frankly its a waste not to) it looks very slightly darker than other locomotives, and possibly rivers dont show up through the windows. The latter I think may have been a railworks problem and Im not sure it hasnt already been fixed.

Against that, it seems to handle plausibly, the cab is first rate, and it sounds fantastic. As a classic bit of BR traction, its bettered only by the Western from what ive seen so far. The Guvs that come as a freebie with it are also very welcome.
