Hello Darren
I must confess I'm reluctant to install these
My computer is a later machine than 2005
I am mystified as to what occurred to cause the package manager problem
It's a pity I cannot re wind to a former time when it was working
Thanks for your assistance
Kind regards Stephen

First suggestion
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
running RW with Vista and only 2gb of ram memory, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I checked your system and you can upgrade to 4gb. It’s advisable to do this. This will probably not solve the package manager problem, but it’s really a good idea to upgrade.
Hopefully Secunia can give you or me a hint what exactly is the problem.
I would also suggest to try running RW only with the default routes and assets installed.
Just rename your assets and routes folder to something else, ex. Old assets.
Make new folders assets and routes, and put only the default content in it.
Remember, Steam can only check the files it knows about, and not the ones that are added.
Steam also can’t remove those files.

Hi
Some good suggestions Erik, but in my case,i run Vista 32 with 4GB ram,and i have a totally clean install of RW on a seprate drive that gets just the RW upgrades and i still have the Package manager errors,in fact i have given up on PM, and use Winrar, this error seems to have crept in a few upgrades ago.

Hello Erik
Thanks for your suggestion
The program you advised is an excellent tool
Unfortunately the only patches out of date were Adobe Flash Player....Java...Bonjour and I tunes
These have all been updated
Now then if you look at my screen earlier on this thread you will notice I only have the default routes
I'm repeating myself here but that is all I've ever had installed
Like Kevin says the problem occurred several updates ago....I only wish I could rewind
Sadly this is not an option so I''m stuck using the work around ie 7 Zip or Win rar
Thanks once again
Kind regards Stephen

As I said earlier in the thread: have you tried Windows System Restore? (Start Menu - Acessories - System Tools - System Restore)

Hello
No I've not tried that because I don't even know how far back I need to rewind
I'm not convinced the fault is on my system
What I mean by this is the fault was not of my making
I don't have any other games on my computer I use my Xbox 360 for those
If I could just have an un updated copy of Railworks to try that would be one approach
Kind regards Stephen

Stephen,

Why not create a restore point and then install? You can then go back if it doesn't solve it or you get new problems as a result.

Also Stephen. You did say you did a reinstall didnt you? If so, you did totally remove all of the content folders from your program files as well leaving no trace of RW behind to corrupt a new install?

I was thinking the same thing. If an update fails, a default folder can become corrupt. Look for duplicated (uncomplete) routes or scenarios. The big advantage of using the package manager is that it will remove .cost, .tgt and also warns for zero byte files. It doesn't happen often and only with some older freeware assets. Of course you can also use a junk cleaner to remove them.
It will also prevent installing the same file twice.
Just make sure to also check your memory. Let it run for a long time.

Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and DBAN that drive and start again mate .. buy another hdd if you have to to copy any thing you need to keep , re-install windows , make sure you get all the fixes and use a decent disk image proggie to get a clean back-up ... don't rely on the not so good idea of rolling back . Install ONLY RW and see how you go . Despite all the good suggestions you've had the problem persists .... and no offence intended to those who have tried help .... all this copying of files can't be a good thing in the long run ... I really don't see this as just a RW problem ... there's something fundamentally wrong with your windows install imho.

my 10 cents worth

Good morning
Thanks for the replies
I will now need time to reflect on this matter
I still cannot get away from the point that Package Manager worked originally
It seems that updates cause the gremlins to strike for some and not others
I have hardly used Railworks since I purchased it
It only has the default installation ...no third party routes etc etc
For the record my computer does not have any games on it
It is either used for correspondence or Railworks and Rail Simulator
Rail Simulator is still on it's first install on this computer
My computer is not the best in the world far from it
Thanks once again
Kind regards Stephen
