Come down to South Australia and make us a route and some trains because a) it's the middle of winter and b) if it were hot we have a perfect solution allowing you to carry on with the coffee...

Hallo all,
To be honest I quite like the sound of it. I like trying to improve on things and it would be quite fun comparing your new score to your old one see where you went wrong and such. I agree with what someone else said though (cant remember who) it would be fun if the score number was hidden :P

Well done RSC on what I think is actually a good idea :D

Having thought some more on the subject, it seems like quite a logical extension of the existing system whereby each drive is evaluated for SPADs, speeding etc etc.
Except now instead of looking at that screen and going "eh, so what" it may provide an incentive to improve performance next time around

Hmm, that is a good way of looking at it.

At first i was a bit sceptical of this feature, but now thinking about it, it'll be good.

i imagine that train drivers often get judged upon how they handle the trains, if they run late, speed or give unacceptable comfort levels for passengers etc. which in RW isn't always apparent then you will be marked down, so having to think about how you handle the train rather than just whack full power on then emergency brake to stop.

Online multiplayer would be excellent, though you'd want to have a route with full AWS.
Currently recreating Salisbury to Exeter 50s/60s.
almost all yard, trackwork, scenery and signalling complete salisbury - wilton. Trackwork 2013 standard to Gillingham, Older beyond. - Abandoned due to newer tools in subsequent TS versions.

As I was told once train drivers are assessed every year. This could be useful for those who want to see how they could improve just as long as it gives you a report on what you did wrong so you know where you have to improve.

And the rest. Written/Oral Rules exam every two years and usually around 5 assessment rides, 5 OTMR downloads per year (post two year qualifying period) Each one is formally written up and then signed by the driver.

I'm all for this new 'career' mode. I think it will make certain scenarios far more interesting and engaging than they currently are. I also think it's not turning the sim into a computer game either because the scoring system is based on actual train operating measures that real drivers would be expected to achieve, so in some ways it will make RW even more realistic. We're not going to be getting points for collecting 100 gold stars or speed boosts by driving over mushrooms!
Also, in the real world you can't just take to the rails in free-roam mode, turning up when you please, speeding at will and stopping for photo opportunities!

For those that like to use RW in a free-roam way then you can just ignore the tasks/points, it won't give you 'game over' like a computer game would! but for those like me who use RW as a driving simulator then I'm sure it is going to add to the experience by providing an incentive to make you drive better!

I'm pretty sure steam locos didn't have a head up display giving the driver and fireman 100 points everytime they coupled to a wagon.
Maybe I haven't read up enough on the subject

A more realistic approach is to give them a good rollicking after they finish their run and have broken various railway rules.. much as it does currently, but could maybe do with some more detail.

I would also dispute that just because people don't want to be scored, they want free roam. I don't want scoring, but I never use freeroam unless I'm testing.
I want a task, I want objectives, I want some prototypical railway operations to complete.
I'm just not interested in having the mystical sky monkeys pasting a number onto my eyeballs everytime I do something they deem worthy, and then having that number compared to "Dave and Ted" who are "teh awesomest" because they used 1lb less than coal than we did on the same run last week.

That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, and as it's totally optional, as long as they don't replace half the scenarios that come with addons with career scenarios then nothing's lost by having it.
I just think realism is a poor arguement.

Love to see if anyone could get 100% for passenger comfort levels on one of those!

Could be that the RW team think driving trains is a competetive computer game . Mushrooms coming next week ??
