Just an Idea
Before I purchased RS at the beginning of this year I rekindled my love affair with Transport Tycoon and often wondered has anybody ever thought of producing an add on along those lines for RW?
After seeing a thread on this forum outlining that RW are thinking of developing a career mode I thought I'd put this idea out to the viewing public. I could be barking up the wrong tree but before the bungee strap was invented there were probably 100 ideas of how to fix luggage to a motorbike that failed.
RAILWORKS TYCOON -
You would start off in 1830, with a fictional landscape including towns, industry, scenery and infastructure. Your given a budget depending on difficulty, your job is to plan, build, run, upgrade and expand a fully functional railway against such competition as the canals and, eventually, roads and maybe the ability to buy out the competition.
A fully customisable interface would allow the user to run the game at whatever speed they wanted depending on how involved they wanted to be. Timetables would have to be worked out to optimise profits, non user train running as Al. As it uses RW as the base program, you can work the line yourself in conjunction with businesses you serve or just set your trains running and fly around checking passenger or freight figures so you can adjust your trains to run more economically, All the time keeping a check on the accounts and opportunities to extend the line to include the next town or to add a branch to serve another industry.
Route and stock builders could play a big hand with customised landscapes, scenery, track, engines and rolling stock, all of which could be incorporated into the game.
The basics of the game are there with RW and it's editor and maybe it'd be worth someone cleverer than me to take a look at.
Comments and discussion is as always welcome whether they be positive or negative.

For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it

Re: Just an Idea
If you are set on doing this, then this is what you'll need to do,
Create one route, multiple times in different eras,
Have appropriate stock in each era,
Know what type of trains existed,
Hive time to do it.

Re: Just an Idea
I think the answer really lies in the combination of the two answers above.
If you are after a "simulation" of the economic side of things, then you need to play Transport Tycoon.
If you are after great graphics, and willing to stick to a series of static settings, then you can adapt RW to your needs. You will share your reports about driven trains with others, you can translate that to virtual currency. You can depict the development of a route over time by creating different versions of it. But be aware that route building in RW is a lot of work, simply because of the realistic graphics, compared to Transport Tycoon. You can supply loads of scenarios, which again is a lot of work, because of the details which are not depicted in Transport Tycoon.
There are virtual train companies in MSTS, you can do the same in RW. But you need to find enough people to play with you, in the same setting, for a certain period of time.

Well for starters, Railroad Tycoon 3 won't work under Vista. It worked after a fashion under XP (but only the original, not the later versions 1.3 onwards). Trainz was supposed to be doing something like this with Boss module but that fell by the wayside when Greg Lane and John Banks baled out and the present incumbents took over.
As with the discussion about Railworks career mode, there are lots of issues with the core to sort out first before introducing something like this either as part of the main game or an offshoot. You would also need much more efficient and quicker world creation - along the lines of RRT3 or Transport Tycoon - than the current route building system where it takes a month or more to produce 20 miles. Wouldn't be a bad thing for the main game either, unfortunately you have to surmount the somewhat indomitable view from RS.com Towers that it's the users that need to change and there's nowt wrong with their game...

Some interesting ideas pjt1974.
Vern, were you watching highlights of the England game when you wrote that post?

Career mode is challenging, engaging and fun, so all of that on top of all the wonderful things you already have with RWs.
regards
Derek

I think root canal surgery without the local anaesthetic would be preferable to watching England! (We should have fielded the cricket team, couldn't do any worse).RSderek wrote:Some interesting ideas pjt1974.

At least you're doing (slightly) better in the World Cup than you did in the Eurovision Song Contest...RSderek wrote:Some interesting ideas pjt1974.

Re: Just an Idea
I thought about the very Idea that if I wanted a pure transport business simulator I would just have to reinstall Railroad Tycoon or whatever my version is called. I just thought it could be a way of extending the life and appeal of RW aswell as combining the Driving and World Editor mode to run as one.
The fact that MSTS has prospered for so long shows that there is life in Rail sims however I suspect most of that prosperity is due to dedicated route and asset builders. With the growing popularity of other new train sims which offer pretty much the same package as RW, it would be something different.

Have the Yanks forgotten the 1950 World Cup?
Re: Just an Idea
Of course they haven't, the remaining members of the team were interviewed constantly before the latest game!
Have to say though g0fthick, that headline did make me laugh.
