Re: Fowler 4F news
Well I've seen no less than 7 livery variations for the loco, plus 3 snowploughs, plus about 8 wagons/wagon variants. This is going to be value indeed!

Anyone see this video RSC just posted?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjBFz1cCObg
I've watched videos of the 4F 44422 before and re-watched them, and this (to me) sounds just like a generic steam engine sound set to me. Of all the videos I've watched of the 44422 I can not notice one recognizable similarity between the real one, and the RSC one.

Re: Fowler 4F news
While I do agree with you about the sound, there was no real mention of authentic sounds or any mention of new sounds provided in the pack on the blog or twitter entry, and if you look at how fast the model quality was updated and changed about in the span of 2weeks after the announcement the DLC was being worked on, I wasn't really expecting sound with it unfortunately. Though I've not been particularly bothered on pricing in the past, I hope this isn't going to be charged at a premium, as without a definate sound set, in my opinion doesn't warrant a large price. Granted I will still buy the pack to have another steam locomotive to run in british lines, its just alittle dissapointing soundwork wasn't undertaken.

Hi
What a shame
a lovely model ruined, by the very long in the tooth default soundset,or is this being released as a Budget loco,i would pay a fiver for the model happily.
Producing a budget versions of loco,s would be a great idea, and would be very popular with users i am sure.
Regards
Kevin

Re: Fowler 4F news
Sounds exactly like a steam engine to me
Re: Fowler 4F news
So it wasn't just me. I'm no audio nitpicker but soon as I heard it I said "I've heard that same soundset about 50x before"
Without a good sound set, I'm not purchasing it regardless of price. With the work Rich Armstrong, Ovvee, and Sly (9F/Challenger are good examples of how Steam should sound) do to just toss in inaccurate generic sounds on a steamer is a terrible shortcut to take especially when it's a in house build.

Very very disappointing!! I'm a bit tired of those 'generic' sounds as well! The model looks stunning. But why oh why stop short?! I'd happily wait a bit longer and pay a bit more for accurate sounds.

Disappointing to say the least, I still fail to see how Railsim.com see that sounds are one of the most important parts of a model. They are critical to a successful model in Railworks. To me is sounds nothing like the real thing at all.

I was going to buy this product but I'm having second thoughts now

Re: Fowler 4F news
It's not the first time sounds have been a let-down, is it?
.
Anyhow, I'm sure someone at some stage will weave some magic - at least it's not as awful as the default Scotsman sounds in MSTS!

Re: Fowler 4F news
Be questionable at best, the black 5 and 7F have never had community or 3rd party commercial sound updates, it would require someone like armstrongpowerhouse to go out to the preserved steam railways and record the sounds off the steam locomotives to make it better, alas unless RSC approaches him or someone else I doubt anything will be changed.bristolian wrote:It's not the first time sounds have been a let-down, is it?.

Also, the thing to consider is, unless the locomotive is well known or what could be considered a "classic" in terms of steam trains, there doesn't seem to be any motiviation to bring a full representation, unless for example, the train is famous, eg. Tornado,Mallard, challenger and so forth.
There is some high quality videos on utube where the sounds could be taken from, with written permission from the original video producer and I dare say if RSC wasn't willing to do it then someone else hired would do so.
I'm not trying to be to negative and slate RSC, but the fact is, I was looking forward to this package, and soon as I watched the utube video for 4F from the DLC, it somewhat beat the motivation out of me to want to purchase the product, after watching some of the HD 4F videos available on the internet, it really makes me feel dissapointed that the sounds are just a carbon copy of the 7F/Black 5 with little to no soul in the sound, I've honestly felt those sounds are flat and do not bring much life to the engine.
Oh well, back to waiting for the Light Pacifics from DT.

Re: Fowler 4F news
Exactly. And another one I'm waiting for is 4MT side tank (again from DT). Realistic sounds are extremely important. It's very welcome RSC has odered soundwork from Armstrong and Oovee for some latest diesel packs (101, Dash 9). Those are awsome but it's latest time to do the same with steamers.crumplezone wrote:Oh well, back to waiting for the Light Pacifics from DT.

Re: Fowler 4F news
Not just me then
Must admit I've been pretty harsh to the audio complainers here in the past, so time for me to take a slice of humble pie here, as I'm also deeply disppointed with the "default" audio that the 4F seems to have.
I'm sure it wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't for that infernal clanking sound that not only drives you crazy when running with the regulator closed, but also seems to even pervade the experience when you're hammering along at full trot.
I'm certainly no expert but I've been to enough preserved railways and stood close enough to plenty of locos to say I've never heard that kind of sound so clearly over every other noise the things make.
Doesn't seem to be available anyway yet but I'm afraid with that audio and Episodes From Liberty City on sale for £9.99, I'm actually sorry to say my money's going elsewhere.
Sorry RSC, I honestly am

Re: Fowler 4F news
I *have* seen video of a steam loco making those loud clanking sounds. It was a Polish engine being shunted dead with the coupling-rod bearings removed.
All joking aside, I wonder if there's scope to synthesize steam loco sounds? That would make it relatively easy to vary the sound between classes, and cover the full range of power and speed more easily. It would even be feasible, I think, to introduce subtle variations between individual locos.
I think in general, filtered pink or white noise on the correct envelope should work. The trick is figuring out the right filter for the internal dimensions of the loco in question.

The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.
