Funny enough I witnessed this recently, I was in the editor for a while and after zooming out a bit I noticed this. Had to exit the editor and it was then ok.

This usually happens if you Alt-Tab out of Editor while in full screen mode (e.g to refer to a map or Google Earth image) then Alt-Tab back in. I refer to it as the rubber sheet (ooer, missus) effect. The workround until/if RS.com fix it is to either run the editor in window mode and end up squinting at the on screen display or don't Alt-Tab. That said, since the update before last I haven't noticed the effect so much but obviously it is still present.

These artifacts are caused by an older and/or incompatible graphics card failing to handle the switch back into RW from another application. I experienced them with my old (and basic) ATI card, but not my newer nVidia 9600GT. They will disappear once you move to a different location at least a few tiles away, or when driving at mainline speed within a couple of minutes.

To solve them for good first update your graphics drivers, if that fails then you'll need to either put up with it or buy a newer graphics card. I would recommend going down the nVidia route as in my experience with my own computers and others their cards seem to cope with multitasking and switching applications better than comparably priced ATI cards, but your mileage may vary.

None of this is to do with switching / alt tabbing because I have not.

The plot thickens then as that's the only circumstances in which I've seen the artefact appear, in what must by now be 100's of hours spent in the editor.

As suggested above try updating your graphics drivers as it does seem related to how RW interfaces with the hardware, if that doesn't work then file a bug report at RS.com.

I've had it a few times when I've (foolishly) either installed something with package manager while the sim is running or checked an open route with RW_Tools

I get similar monumental artifacts appearing occasionally but in play mode, and that's with the latest NVidia drivers and the (I believe) latest card (GTX 295). As said previously, they disappear when moving through the landscape to the next tile.

Never had any problem with tasking, with radeon hd3850. Not in railworks, nor in gta4, nor in other games. BTW the tasking problems always caused by windows, but now in win7 or vista these are disappeared.
My top wishes: Realistic engine physics - Superelevation - Multi-core support - Remove Physix engine, and use better one

I went back into the editor today and now it doesn't do it. :o
I'm updating the drivers anyway, seems I'm a bit behind.
