Steam files defrag doesn't work !!!

After the Steam update this morning and with the amount of downloads in the last week or so, I decided to do a defrag this afternoon, however, after clicking the button to start, I sat down to watch TV as I know it would take a little time to go through the motions, but, after 15 minutes, it hadn't even started !!!!
Has anyone else attempted to do a defrag recently please, and were you successful ?

I attempted a defrag immediately after the Steam update and 24hrs later the C drive was still not complete, so I cancelled. I then attempted it again and it worked fine

Are we are referring to the Steam defrag utility and not a normal defrag. I did this after the update last week and a cache verification and it took about 5 seconds to tell me that it had finished. It seems that it does not have to do anything after a full cache verification.

It seems that after the recent Steam client UI revamp, you have to exit completely from Steam, then restart it, then select the relevant Verify File Intergrity or Defrag Files options for them to work.

You didn't used to have to do that, so my guess is that it will probably get picked up in a future Steam patch.

Thanks for the responses and yes, I was referring to the Steam cache file defrag utility, however, I just tried it again and still no joy, but, it says -

Internal Data Fragmentation 0 %

Clusters : 0/33

It didn't move again for 10 minutes, I assume that if it does go through the motions it would show up afterwards as 100%, and the clusters would show up as 33/33, and I presume it would take a few minutes rather than a few seconds ???
