I won't speak for others but for me, just $30.00 (american!) is a lot to consider purchase wise for something that isn't a full blown route. Not saying it's over priced or not worth it, just $30.00 is something to think about plopping down right now when I already own a payware version of the same motive power.

Personally I will be buying this. I have sly's 20 and I am perfectly happy with it like others. If I bought a loco pack and 2 wagon packs separately I would expect it to cost me around £20 so in real terms this is no different.

I've got to hang on for at least another 5 weeks for the boxed version, but, I'll be able to buy it at discount price, 'cos I've got my reward points saved up from my previous purchases from JT. They've also demonstrated with their freebie snowploughs that they've got some superb scripting now available, so, at the end of the day I've got 2 ZZA's free and the new Class 20 pack for £15.00, I can't wait.....

Thanks to Just Trains.

TractorBasher wrote:I can understand that for some people £20 is a lot of money, but if you compare it to the cost of, say, a new railway/train DVD, the price is very similar. As with railway DVDs, there is only a limited audience for RailWorks and moreso for the various addons. I trust that what I will get from Just Trains will be of the highest quality and will provide many more hours of entertainment than the aforementioned DVD, so this is better value for money. I have Sly's class 20 too, and have been very happy with it, but I am also keen to see what JT have done with their model, and to have the extra rolling stock in this pack.
Yeah and Railworks itself is roughly the same price which comes with many locos and stock, and a handful of routes...

Nothing like selecting the facts to prove a point! As a balance try 40+ Airports, of good quality, for £14.99 and a range of quite sophisiticated civil aicraft simulations at £25 - £30 each.

I suspect that to an extent the pricing reflects the relative sizes of the markets rather than the man hours expended on development. If developers are to get any return for their efforts then on that basis RW addons are going to be more expensive.

I'm sure they're still testing the market with DLC but I do wonder if a lower cost would increase sales beyond the reduction.
I know a lot of people shun £12+ for a loco. For £5 would they sell 3 times as many? With a product that has zero reproduction cost once the "template" is built, it's an interesting question.
The problem is, how do you judge what sales might have been for a new release when you pick a particular price point. If only we had a time machine to test all the options :D

I think its far too expensive like most other recent RW payware, I dont like the way the pricing issue is going with this sim. First a level of around £10 then we moved on to £15 loco's now £20 loco's and people are still proclaiming "good value for money" :o File downloads dont have any production costs as far as I know, advertising is very low cost using community sites and Steam, so sell a 1000 of them for £6.99 instead. The Railworks DVD i bought was a real bargain, it should have been around £300 going by these addon prices.

To counteract all those posts that proclaim the value and justify these inflated price levels, I will not pay more than £10 for any Loco even if it does have a couple of wagons and scenarios included. So its looking like my RW install wont be getting any larger for the time being. :)

Thank goodness for those wonderful guys who still make freeware items for us 8)

Someone give this man a medal! I had my massive rant before about this as some of you probably know, so I wont bother doing it again. ;)

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the price of addons it comes down to what each person views as good value. I think the price of RW addons is fair as they stand I'm sure others out there do not. And besides there is some great free stuff for RW aswell and you can't beat that for value.

I bought Rail Sim for 3.99 in a bargain bin at PC World and developed my interest with that. I only got railworks 6 months ago and I've moulded it the way I like it. We have great freeware route like Cresston, Northern Lights and Wales & Borders, as well as the very good default routes. I personally would rather be spending my money on decent routes now as I have all of the loco's I'm interested in right now, including the IHH 20. Having said that I'll probably end up buying this one as well; just for the RHTT.

Some people say it's expensive; others say value for money. Either it's right for someone to buy it for them or it isn't. This isn't really an expensive hobby. I mean 00 railway modelling is significantly more expensive. The 390 Pendo Pack from Hornby for example costs £113. Physical models are always going to be more expensive though for the production and materials costs, whereas downloads and a few boxed versions cost comparatively little. I would imagine the respective markets to be of similar size though. It all depends on what value you place on your money I guess, and this is obviously going to be different for everyone.

As an aside; one of my other hobbies is astronomy. Now anyone who tells me Railworks DLC is not value for money would obviously not be interested in paying a few grand for what is basically a piece of glass in a metal tube. Each to their own I suppose... 8)
