FSX had water effects on the windshield but no wipers. So, since the game was an unplayable burden without this feature I propped a metronome in front of my monitor to simulate windshield wipers. Only then could I play the game correctly.

:D I think the irony may be lost on some here.

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Excuse me, I think a few of you in this thread should re-read my original post again, there's nothing wrong at all with the way I `worded` it, or maybe your referring to the `useless` part in the thread title, well in all honesty that's what they are at the moment in my view.

Oh and as for the reply about not being able to please everyone all the time, did I say it ever was possible? Just for the record there's alot more about the sim that I'd like changed/enhanced to make RW alot better than it currently is, but I'll keep them to myself as it appears your not allowed to express opinions.

 try MSTS or BVE (drivel???!!!). Folk there have been discussing stuff and fixing stuff for years. Oh and most of the Rottweillers have gone back to their beds  :)

As for some of you on here a thought for the day? Most of us could "have worded things better" from time to time, so think "Never mind the words ....what's he actually saying?"

Hiya
I agree the wipers are pretty pointless as they are, but thats just the way it is for now.
I'm sure back in the day Kuju had big plans for them, b ut they did not get them finished.

Water being wiped away from the windscreen is certainly a nice to have feature and I'm sure we will get it, but it is in a queue along with everything else. I could bring it forward but then that would just push something else back.

Every feature in RWs can be improved, just like any other game. However the beauty of RWs and the RS.com team is that we are still here to make the difference, and we are doing what we have always said we would do.
RS.com have laid some great foundations this past year and we are getting stronger every month.
The future of RWs is very bright indeed.

If you have a comment that you want RS.com to read then please email support@railsimulator.com

This thread, why was it raised, it's pointless!!

Post by davveb »

As my jokey subject edit suggests, I don't understand the purpose of this thread. Where do you draw the line with this attitude? You might as well say "what's the point of showing doors on the buildings if they can't be opened?" or "what's the point of showing snow falling if you don't see it getting thicker on the ground?"
Personnally I do think the sim would be improved if you did have water forming on the screen, blurring your vision, which could be cleared using the windscreen wipers. But the absence of this doesn't make the windscreen wipers pointless, they are there for atmosphere. After all, the default diesels have an ammeter, however you can ignore it because there is no simulation of overcurrent failure, but you wouldn't say the gauge is useless would you?

The point is, how do you define 'useless'?

The animation of the drops being swept away is not shown in engines in general. Like Sly mentioned, it could be done, but it did not appear worthwhile, compared to other things calling for effort.

The animation of the wiper, seen from inside, greatly improves the illusion of driving through the rain. Of course, there is always a next step. But clearly, they serve a purpose, so they cannot be called useless in my view.

Mike answered the question perfectly: Why were they added? Because people complained about not having them in another game.

While we're at it, when I drive 'head out' in the rain, why don't I get wet?

i also think so, but it's never too late for improvements.
let's wait and see what the future will bring. :)

Call me weird, but when it starts to rain, I always turn on the wipers. It adds to the effect, I feel. Yes, it would be nice if raindrops built up on the windscreen, but it's not the end of the world that it doesn't. As always, I'm pleased that people like Sly and Derek have responded and acknowledged that this is something they would like to see in the sim too, and indeed Sly has already tried it out. It does at least show that they are pushing the development of RailWorks forward and bringing more features to it. I'm sure, in time, rain effects will come. For now, I'm glad to have working wipers.

In another thread, Sly said this. Who knows, it just might be that! :D

Just to let you know that the 9F is very close ..
The model is all finished, however after a bit of experimentation I have found a way to add some exiting new functionality . :D
More details soon

Reminds me about the rumbling mattress and other hardware gimmick that Kuju & Philips announced in 2006 or so.

Spraying around some water would be a good idea because then you need to buy a waterproof keyboard, too. Plus some towels. Of course, we need prototypical greasy rags to dry the face after too much head-out viewing. Now that would be a serious offer for that souvenir shop that RSDL started at some point in history between now and the Philips press release. Those caps should sell better in a future with wet & windy simming experience.

But then again, if they rate it 3+ (and for Germany 0+), the raindrops should well stay in the box or the screen. "Parents sue game company after child caught a bad cold during an excessive simulation session" --- not the news the boss is waiting for.
