Any LNER fans out there?

Post by QLDriver »

As a new RW user, I thought I'd have a play at making something...
A few days' work, and about 14,500 polys. Obviously the cylinder block/smokebox saddle needs work, it needs washout plugs, ashpan, valve gear, sanders, etc! But I'm quite pleased with it as a start. If anyone has any info on the cab, the valve gear arrangement (I know it's Stephenson's), or a 3500 gallon group standard tender, I would appreciate it. I do have a drawing for the 4200 gallon tender, but it's already available with the V2.

Hi QLDriver and welcome to the Forum,
Any LNER fans out there?
Well I'm one and suffering from withdrawal symtoms since taking up with RS/RW.

That J39 looks fantastic for "early days" and I will be watching your progress with interest, please keep posting.

Hi QLDriver,

Just what I need, a J39 will look great on my Scottish Borders route (if I ever finish it).

I built a poor J39 for MSTS many years ago, and the following is a photo (which I coloured) of a cab, which from memory the sender said was from a J37 but was 'very similar'.

I hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for the welcome guys, and thanks for the cab picture Mike.

I actually had a bit of a brainwave regarding the cab. The D49's had VERY similar boilers (I believe the last batch actually had J39 boilers), and were a more or less contemporary Gresley design, so "Morayshire" is probably the closest thing to a J39 still around - I found some pictures on the SRPS website of 246's cab. http://www.srpssteam.com/gallery/displa ... fullsize=1

hey dude,

I am mainly a GWR fan, but I have to say thats a cracking model, and looking very promising to add to our ever growing list of available engines for railworks, great work mate, keep it up.

That is a lovely start to what is actually my fave LNER class they are lovely looking machines and certainly had pull! It is a real shame that none of these or similar classes were actually preserved. Look forward to seeing this one develop

Thanks for the great welcome guys!

I've made a bit more progress since the last shot. Principally, the cab has beading on it now, the ejector pipe is on there, the coupling rods are improved, the cylinders are almost there, and I've made a good start on the valve gear (I decided that in the absence of good information, I'd just base it on the 4F valve gear that I have a good drawing of). Still a way to go, but I'm making progress!
