Re: Real railways are noisy!
Hi
The sound part of RW that really anoys me is the unrealistic flange squeal, especially with the hst ,now i travel a lot on HST,s i dont recal deafening squealing on any slight curve, with CWR you get a smooth quiet ride, maybe you get it in a unit on a tight branchline, but on the mainline it just sounds silly, wish i could disable this sound.
Regards
Kevin

Re: Real railways are noisy!
IMHO the sounds are a a major failing in both RS and RW. At least in RS you could get sounds from Richard and others and use these but as mentioned these get overwritten in RW. It's a pity that RSDL can't do some sort of deal with the people who have produced more realistic sounds eg. Richard's HST sounds and include them on the Steam Platform as default. The Default HST sounds are dire in the extreme. The best Default sound is the Class 37 and if I am not mistaken Chris Bailey is mentioned in dispatches for this one. His ELR addon for MSTS took sounds to the next level. The Class 40 being quite incredible. The sounds make a big difference for me in the enjoyment of this program.

I've always thought the best rail joint sounds in any rail simulator are those in BVE.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
I have heard a Hst mflange on the mainline at Landore, Swansea the speed limit drops to 20 and the track goes around a 180 degree bend and you can here it. You usually here it more when trains are going slow around bends or over points.
BVE sounds are way better than RW much more realistic.
Another thing which is very unrealistic is the fact you can here the engine inside the cab as loud as outside. Im watching a cabride dvd as I write this message of a 159 from London Waterloo to Bristol Temple Meads and you can hardly here the sound of the engine thats all I can here is the wheel flange from time to time, the notches on the throttle and AWS.
I might be mistaken but im sure the Voyager has different sounds incab and outside which is much more realistic.
I have got cabrides of HSTS and 47s and you can hardly here the engines inside the cab unless the window is open.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
In my project I have two sets of sounds made from same samples. Since RW does allow INSIDE and OUTSIDE tags in every soundfile its very possible to have different cab sound to outside world. Just a initiative from content developer is needed. As the sound insulation is function of wavelenght versus room wall thickness I usually weaken high frequency part of the sample to get more authentic inside sounds and it should work fine on everyones soundcard. If something is to be blamed in RW compared to other engines, it shouldn't be the capability of sound engine!
Re: Real railways are noisy!
Amen to that. A final thought for the "it isn't as loud as the real thing" brigade posting on this thread and the deltic one - You are actually right, but you don't really expect your puny PC speakers to output the same sound levels as a 3000hp locomotive do you? I have read the class 55's used to get about 100dB's in the cab at full power. Do you want to use your PC wearing ear defenders?SaMa1 wrote:If something is to be blamed in RW compared to other engines, it shouldn't be the capability of sound engine!
Re: Real railways are noisy!
Friday I took a visit to Denton, TX, to see Union Pacific's N0. 844, a Northern (4-8-4) class steam engine. As it approached the Whistle Stop, I was able to get a 25-Second head-start of video before the loco came in, just by listening to the engine approach in the distance. Steam engines are loud! If I was able to get a 25-second head start of video taping the engine JUST by listening to the sound of the engine approaching, explain why the Black 5 seems silent until it is right next to me?
Re: Real railways are noisy!
Attenuation distance. It is defined in the proxyxml sound blueprints, and determines how far away a particular sound can be heard. You can extend these distances, but you should be aware that this will greatly increase the demands on your sound card as it will be trying to play more sounds simultaneously, and it will probably start "losing" sounds, or even fall over.BenBlairL wrote:explain why the Black 5 seems silent until it is right next to me?
