I'll be happy for any kind of illumination to be implemented, not only realistic.
Do you mean year 2010 ?.
It seems to be rather difficult to achieve this target.
But this feature will open new horizon for scenarios developers.
I can only hope and "cross my fingers" for their success.

Here's what can be achieved with good lighting effects:

Yep, looks nice.
However...
Can you build your own route in that?
Can you add your own scenery?
Can you add new locos?
Can you write your own scenarios?
Can you pack up your work and share with your friends?

Swings and roundabouts.

Derek

Unfortunately, this trailer is misleading big time.
I've this simulation. The head lights are very weak therefore you drive in very dark tunnels as opposite to the Vol 1 (the PATH) where headlight are strong sealed beams and you can enjoy the oustanding graphics fully illuminated.

Watch this one instead then, set in New York, above and below ground.

No, you can't build your own route, etc, etc, never suggested you could. and I wasn't knocking RW, I love it now, with all this new stock and routes we have. I was just trying to show people what is possible with lighting in a game.

I think Derek is trying to point out that it takes a lot more work to be able to do that in a game where the location of objects is not up to the programmers, but up to the users.

WOS is a bad example ..Its basically a railway looking game attached to a rendering engine.. Don't get me started..

However it would be nice to see the ability of light at night affecting assets, even if its not prototypically British..

Light beams did work in RS.
However, they only lit up the track and terrain so it was not ideal and more code needed to be written to light up assets too. There was also a visual bug that created ordering problems on assets with transparency so the code was commented out.
We also want more control over strength/distance etc for the beams, otherwise it would just look a little daft".

From what I've read on this thread, it sounds to me like the lights in RW are working very much as they did in MSTS, a bug or design fault I am more than happy to put up with (especially if I know there is something being done to fix it).

For me, this is the biggest problem with RW, especially as I like driving at night, or dusk, etc, when you just can't see the track side signage adequately, and I am trying to drive without track monitor for realism.

I do wonder how much longer it will take, considerring how long RW (and RS before it) has been available as a commercial product. I do appreciate the work that has been put in, but I'd much prefer to have working lights than a dozen steam engines (as I'm more of a diesel man myself - though I'm getting into steam on RW!!!! - so thanks for that :) ).

That also brings a question of how realistic you want to be though. Do you really need to be able to see track signage or should you know it from route knowledge as per real life? There was a discussion last year regarding this concerning one of my routes which turned out that it was the norm that much of the track signage was missing/stolen meaning that drivers had to rely purely on their knowledge of the route.

I know this doesn't solve the issue of lighting but that maybe a "professional" view of each route you drive should be taken, to learn the route in hand so that you dont need to rely on the signage in darker conditions. Just trying to throw something else into the pot, I try to learn all routes asap to eliminate the need for the F3 display, whether day or night.

Yes, but they don't exactly turn night into day for 300 feet ahead of the train, which is the case in some countries, especially the one I'm living in at the moment. :)
