Count me in with the watchers. And take your time. And if things don't work with train jumping, then release them with a warning tag. Better have some clever stuff with some limitations, than not have it at all.

Re: Details of steam loco steam effects
Stuart, I too found the same problem in getting LUA scripts to react differently when applied to a Driven loco as opposed to a AI loco. My proposed solution was to also have scripts for AI locos and ones for driven locos, just as you describe. But also hoping that you do manage to overcome this little problem. I've implemented what I can in my Talyllyn Railway route that Matt is due to distribute soon so will see what reaction I get.scefhwil wrote:As posted above I am unfortunately having problems with using my scripts where cab jumping is involved. Seems RW isn't yet ready to be used in the way I'm trying. Have yet to see if the latest update has had any affects though, so here's hoping. If not then I my have to revert to plan A and have separate AI-only locos (bring back the #?).

Re: Details of steam loco steam effects
Hi there, are there any updates on this one please? Or if not, can anybody give me any clues as to what controllers can be used in .lua scripts in engine simulation: specifically, can any audio events be used to reliably trigger or control particle effects?
I want to be making pretty models, not faffing about with scripting I barely understand to make my loco look reasonably real, not like a Hornby toy.
Oh for some documentation.
Peter

Re: Details of steam loco steam effects
Yes, apologies for the very few updates on this project. However, it is still alive and progressing, just very slowly as I don't have the time for trainsims like I used too and life at the moment is very busy with higher level priorities. That said, I am hoping to post some updated photo's, even a video, soon. I have gotten a little side tracked over the last few weeks with making my own steam particle texture (blame an enjoyable day at the Forest of Dean Railway for that!). One issue I do have is that with every update RW release I have to carefully retest my coding to check what effects any "undocumented" changes they have done may be having (like the "dead" loco tick box). Good news though is that the last major update seems to have sorted out my previous problem with RW crashing when changing locos in a Standard Scenario.
The only controllers that I have found to work reliably are those listed in the wiki and any that are created in the engine.bin file. Not sure about reading sound contollers. It didn't seem to work for me when I first tried it many months ago (for safety valves going off), but RW has been updated a couple of times since and for sure they have been playing around with the sound and scripting code, so who knows now! Is there something particular your trying to do Peter?

Re: Details of steam loco steam effects
Hi
I just wanted to say that I have added a lot of steam effects to the locos in my Talyllyn route based on help from Stuart and various others and would be more than willing to share the LUA code I used.
My scripts are built specifically for these locos while Stuart's project is attempting a much bolder and more complex solution for a wider set of locos so I don't claim to have the magic " one size fits all" solution.
For reference my LUA scripts provide :-

cylinder cocks with default sounds
whistle with default sound
stationary exhaust smoke
exhaust steam linked to regualtor and blower settings

Re: Details of steam loco steam effects
Wow! Was it really June that I last posted an update? Well, this project is certainly not dead but it is still progressing slowly. Life is still too busy to justify as much sim time as I'd like, and then there is my tendancy to get side tracked...... but that's for a separate thread.

Meanwhile, the particles effects keep getting tweaked and I'll soon be happy enough with them to move to the next stage.

I just want to thank the generosity of the above contributors.....this is a prime example of the real heart of the RW community at work - helping others (instead of the usual selfish, constant, bickering).
