Will we see this today? Or has it been postponed again?

Re: V2 screenshot at railsimulator.com
Hi,
No issues, (well we had some minor graphics to fix) but that is not what held it up, Challenger promo took it's place. edit: Oh and Thanksgiving.
regards
Derek

Why DO people still make web sites to 800x600?

Because some people still use 800x600 and it's quite irritating to scroll around just to read a post.lateagain wrote:\

...which is why the same rule applies here.

Well i have not seen an 800 x 600 screen in many years. They should have by now upgraded. The bigger the better the screenshots will be. I for one dont care for technology that is now 10 years out of date.

What about people's internet connection, not everyone has access to broadband.

You haven't bad eyesight then, 800x600 suits my old peepers just fine---the argument should be 'why do people make websites with FIXED dimensions, when using a percentage on the width allows the page to dynamically fit the users screen.'

BTW Ash the UKTS site is not configured to 800x600 but (and this facility has been available in web design for years) actually adapts to the resolution of the screen. I've viewed it on several different resolutions on several diferent monitors. IMO the rule on screenshots is equally out of date BUT I would conceed that those with very large monitors may be tempted to post very large (physically and file sized) images without some constraint. When I did a web design course a couple of years ago I was staggerd to find that 800x600 is still considered to be "THE STANDARD"
As one of the older members of the forum my eyesight isn't that great anymore. With the correct glasses AND the fact that you can vary the size of text on your display there is no reason that anyone NEEDS to use 800x600 anymore. Even if they choose to use that res they can scroll across the screen if they need to. 1024x768 was available on machines I've long since sent to the tip and monitors that were so old they died in service. Even my two monitors (desktop and laptop) are 14:9 and current machines are shiping with 16:9 monitors.
Put it this way. If, as many have, you'd invested in a large flat screen TV would you be content to view 4:3 TV images in low resolution when the technology for HD widescreen is available on most channels and is coming to them all in the next few months? Would you buy a car that only ran on 5 star leaded petrol?

I will go with you on that geoff. Analog TV is going off soon and digital will be in control. No point sitting around watching your old tv... unless you like white noise.
Having done web design myself .... glad i have gotten away from it. From what i have seen UK TS does not work in 800 x 600.

Re: V2 screenshot at railsimulator.com
the widescreen 'con' means that 800x600 is still worthwhile on the web - have a look at the screen res of that little Asus machine or a Dell Mini 9 and then think again.
widescreens are actually shallow height screens - no wider than 4 by 3's but not as deep

Personally I rarely use any machine for viewing DVD's but I do watch BBC's iplayer and 4od occasionally and the adoption of widescreens for such AV uses is entirely logical.
As far as computing is concerned I find the widescreen a very real advantage both for graphics and surfing and it's become a huge benefit when working on spreadsheets where having a number of sheets open at once is often useful. The fact is that most machines now ship with a widescreen monitor, like em or not
IF you find it essential to own a notebook then web pages that automatically fit the screen should work? After all you can read a paperback and few of those are printed on wider paper than you'd get with a 9" screen .....or doesn't anyone under 40 read books any more
BTW a very good friend and ex colleague of mine was registered blind (obviously not totally blind) and I was interested to see that the RNIB had software and support for her to view normal everyday software in hugely magnified form. Obviously this involved a lot of scrolling. When you have to do it, as she did, the arguements against scrolling just didn't come into it. In fact when she finally left the organisation they gave her the software so that she could use it at home.
Actually a search facility on the RS web site would have found what my old eyes missed but I still think that with the 800x600 standard removed the site could enjoy a much better layout? After all it's promoting the product and for that bigger has to be better?
Certainly those V2 shots deserve a greater prominence surely?
