Railworks is here! but already...

...its testing my patience. :D

Ok I'm, not here to have a moan...yet, I just have a question -

I'm trying to install RW from the disc and its gotten so far and come up with 'the Steam servers are to busy to handle your request right now... try later' Now then, when I restart the installation it comes up again BUT just before that a box comes up saying 'Steam will now download all the RW files' . With a download time of over 5 hours!!!!! .

So, can I take it that this box is just a generic message and all that will actually happen is that Steam will recognise the game as being installed? or will it try and download the lot?? I've already registered the game so I can't see why it needs to connect again...

Any help would be great, many thanks

Ant :D :bad-words:

If you have the disc, you don't need to download the entire Rail Works program, it's on the disc, so don't know why you're getting that message. As for the busy message, I got that when I first got Rail Works and was left twiddling my fingers till the following day before I could get through to STEAM and active Rail Works.

You can change the location of the server your downloading from in the options. Try one of the others.

I have heard of this happening before for some users but why it happens Iam not sure. Have a look at this post I made http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 2#p1191332 it may help ( or not as the case may be ).

Hi,

Thanksfor the link I was reading through that while waiting for Steam to do its thing.

I tried deleting the files on the steam page so I could start again but it just hung. I tried starting Steam again. Nothing. I then tried running Railworks, again nothing. It all just stops.

So I then thought start again. TRied to uninstall but it won't let me. Finally managed that though and just tried a fresh install and now Steam says that the servers are offline, or it begins to update then stops responding, or it says I'm not connected to the net. Which I clearly am.

Its a mess.

I understand that evenings are busy with traffic but this is more like its throwing a wobbly.

I'm completely hacked off with this already. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT THE DISC IN AND INSTALL THE PROGRAMME NOT HAVE TO DEPEND ON SOMETHING WE HAVE LITTLE CONTROL OVER. There is a distinct lack of information regarding whats actually happening or what needs doing next. If the process happens to run smoothly then you don't need any I guess but when it goes wrong your just left clutching at straws...

Sorry rant over I know its all been said but someone is clearly taking the Michael.

I should add that I've just tried again.

This time it started the install then went to the Steam 'my games' page and tried downloading the game. So I did exactly what is advised in the link and all it does is take me back to the same steam page.

Oooh... hang on... its doing it... from the disc... its not stopped yet... my god the anticipation... I'm in a cold sweat... 4451mb, is that right... will the paper disc survive...

Answers on a postcard. This time instead of starting from 'Run' I started it from the disc (ie - open draw, close draw wait for autorun)

To be continued...

Unfortunately you chose a bad time to install Railworks.... Left4Dead2 a Major Valve title is in the "PreLoad" / Demo stage and as such people are preordering and preloading to their systems. The demand for this alone will be causing some strain depending on which download server you choose / allocate, couple this with other games preloading or users (re)downloading their already purchased games and you can see why things like this happen.

Usually though the problems only last a few days whilst the hardcore Valve supporters buy the latest and greatest Gabe Newell creation, so just grit your teeth if you're having connection issues.

Hi,

Thanks for the info Andy, I thought the servers were very busy. Now I know why...

Right. Got it working last night and loaded up to the home screen. Damn, bedtime. So I thought get up early, have a little play...

I've done the 15 min intro scenario and first impressions are good... I need to play about with my settings as they're a little lower than in RS BUT it certainly runs smoother with a lot of scenery on so I have to like that!

Love the 37 its a great model, and is it just me or are the physics better? I can't remember seeing the train bunch up on the brakes in RS. If so its a great improvement, buffer/coupling sounds would be a massive plus for that bit of realism, I do miss that from msts, you could almost feel the 'push' on your loco.

Also loading times are vastly improved.

And proper chuffing steam engines too.

So far so good... next is porting over my routes...

Hi Ant, glad to see you're up and running. After hearing about your saga I'm glad I had decided on the d/l version. It came down that fast I hadn't realised and was smooth sailing from start to finish.

Enjoy exploring when you have time.

Good to hear it has finally worked Ant and that you are steadily becoming impressed. The slack coupling was introduced shortly after release and then people complained that it shouldn't happen with a tender on a steam loco, I think this was rectified almost immediately as well so who knows, your buffer/coupling sounds may become a reality soon enough!

Hi guys,

I hope so Darren, sounds would be great and not that difficult to implement surely?

So far I'm quite impressed - at least with the visual and physics side of it although after saying loading times are improved, the Paddington and Castle Rock routes take a while. Its Hedborough that takes the least amount of time and it runs smoothly on my pc. Still playing with settings though, I turned anti-aliasing on last night - vast improvement but frame rates drop through the floor. I had it much better in RS, bit more experimenting I think.

Steam is still an issue with me, I just don't agree with it being an integral part of the sim. There's no reason why we can't have it as standalone with the option of linking to it when needed. However I have followed peoples advice on here regarding offline mode and updates and so far its been non-intrusive.

Hi Paul - the disc version was just for my own piece of mind, I like to have a proper disc there if needed, it was just a shame the servers were so busy, though its a big let down that it just decides of its own accord to download from Steam when there's clearly a disc in??? Once it did install though it was very quick... I downloaded the 280 and 158 packs last night and it took about four minutes to download and install to the game - THAT I was impressed with!! :D

The 158 is class, its a lovely model and very pleased, many thanks to Ben for the time and effort. But the 280 did it for me, I fired up one of he scenarios last night ( coal one with the banker, sorry can't remember the name! ) and I was like a pig in the proverbial. Its a fantastic model and along with the wagons and the time of day (that dusk almost night time setting when the suns going down I love so much in RS) and I fell in love with the sims (RS and RW) all over again!!

Kind Regards
Ant :D
