3D Canvas Tutorial Index

The intricacies, or simplicities of 3D modelling are worth understanding. Alongside other forums like Building Rolling Stock, Scenic Item Creation and the other tool specific forums here's another place to ask questions that just don't quite fit the other forums.

3D Canvas Tutorial Index

Post by longbow »

I'm starting a thread here so that 3D Canvas (3DC) users can post links to useful tutorials or articles relevant to RW content creation. If the response justifies it I'll consider putting together an index by topic. If the tutorial merits it please consider asking the author to put it into the download library - I have just done this with Decapod's excellent building tutorial extracted from the forums.

If you are just starting out with 3DC my advice would be to learn the basics, then move straight on to a modelling tutorial. For non-modellers 3DC is neither intuitive nor well documented, but don't feel intimidated; you need only a few basics to make scenery. Plus the excitement of creating your first model will encourage you. Start with one of the basic tutorials below; simple as they are, they show you most of the techniques you need to make Paddington Station. Note that the basics of 3DC model making are identical whatever sim you are building for. If you already modelling in 3DC but are trying RW content for the first time try the Modelling a (Simple!) Building tutorial below.

Basic - for 3DC beginners. Mostly for MSTS but the same modelling techniques apply to RW.
Getting Started in 3DCanvas - The First Steps - an orientation guide for first-time 3DC users http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... leid=14609
3D Canvas Basics Another first-timer tutorial from Doug Kightley. http://www.3d-canvas.com/3DCanvasDocume ... basics.htm
Creating MSTS content with 3D Canvas Pro. A set of youtube video tutorials by nickeax from basics right through to loco building http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=64850
Basic Building Tutorial - Ian Morgan's classic that got me started in 3DC http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... ileid=2966
Building a Telephone Box in 3DCanvas - some additional techniques http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... leid=13791
4 Wheel Wagon Tutorial - Ian Morgan details it all, including making the textures; 3DC plug-ins have since automated some of the tricky bits http://www.amabilis.com/tutorials.htm

Intermediate - more advanced techniques and tips you may need for RS/RW modelling:

How to Get a Loco Model from 3D Canvas into RW - still working through this one! http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... leid=19166
Railsim LOD tutorial - 3DC does a good job of automating LOD creation, but Decapod explains how it works http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=93508

Ultimate Unwrap - 3DC's unwrap tool is very basic. This good and cheap payware tool fills the gap. http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx

Thanks for a very useful resource, and valuable for all 3dc users. May I suggest a stickied link from the 3dc section so that non-RW modelers can find it?
Mods please delete this post if it clutters Longbow`s list

As someone who has just bought 3D Canvas with the hope of learning how to use it and hopefully to create something for RS/RW I want to say thank you, as it is very good idea and good timing from my point of view. :)
