Portals Tutorial

Post by NeutronIC »

Is there a tutorial about using portals anywhere? I use them to terminate services frequently enough but never really worked out how to start them from there!

Well it is advised not to originate services from portals as they can cause problems, now with that out of the way here is how you would do it -

1. Create the AI service with all its details as you would normally, on the track in front of the portal.

2. Open the portal propeties by clicking on the central post of the portal.

3. Click on the "add" button and then click on the service you have created in 1.

4. The service should disappear into the portal.

5. Close ( deselect ) the portal properties window and reopen it and the service you added should be listed.

6. Save.

7. To Remove the service from the portal, open the portal properties window.

8. Click on the service you want to remove and click on the "remove" button.

9. The service is now linked to the cursor, place the train on the track.

10. Close the portal properties window.

11. Save the scenario.

12. If you need to edit any service listed in the portal properties you need to remove it from the portal thus placing the service back on the track, edit it and then add it back into the portal as before.

Comment - Not a very user friendly function, and from what others have said this can cause problems which is why it is advised not to use that functionality. But you can experiment if you want to, just no complaining allowed if it stuffs everything up :) . Perhaps one day they will get around to improving /fixing this function.

One use though which may be benign is to have AI traffic between two portals where their is no player interaction such as on the main line at Templecombe or other disconnected tracks.

You should put that into a pdf and upload it to here or elsewhere perhaps.

From what I've read in other posts here, and on the RW wiki, problems using portals are most likely to occur if services are timed too close together, so that a service appears from the portal into a section already occupied by the previous service spawned from it. So long as you test to make sure your AI traffic doesn't get backed up and block the section of line that your portal is on, you shouldn't have any problems. I think they're a useful feature if you are sensible about your AI traffic. I have seen it suggested that they are not used and that all services are placed on track, but that isn't always practical.

I'll look into it.
I'll ask Chris the author.

Cheers

[Edit] Chris says he does not mind.
If anyone wants to, they can create a PDF of Chris' tutorials that are on my forum and upload to UKTrainSim.
