Moving the camera to show the player what to do.

Post by chrisell »

I played a shunting scenario last night on one of the American routes and was surprised to see the camera being moved by the scenario to show me where to go and which cars to hook up. Is this something we can create in our scenarios or is this some RSC magic we're not allowed to use?

Ok so I figured out this is the "Cinematic Camera" in the scenario editor - it allows you to make flybys and things like that by placing camera with timed locations, fields of view etc. Looks great except that to use them you need to use scripting. That in itself isn't a problem but the only realistic way to trigger these cameras is by a named event, and you can't name events because that is the one field in the scenario timetable editor (for the event) that is greyed out. I guess RSC don't want us making our own cinematic cameras?

For the curious though, here's how you make a cinematic camera.
First, add one to the scene - they're under the 'miscellaneous' bag in the scenario editor.
Bring up the properties panel on the right side of the editor and you'll see an arrow with a '+' next to it - click that to add extra camera keyframes and position them where you like - there's also a 'look at' function so you can make the camera look at a specific object. You can then use the left/right arrows at the top of the properties panel to go through the keyframe list and set fields of view for each camera etc. The confusing one is the 'duration' field - this is actually the time taken to get from the current keyframe to the next one. So if you set it to 00:10, then it will take 10 seconds to get from this keyframe to the next one.

Finally, you can use the VCR controls at the bottom of the properties page to playback your camera. Congrats - now you have something in the scenario that you can't use :o

Very interesting post. I might have to have a look into this and see if it is possible to hack somehow.

I recall this being discussed a while ago.

Interesting. Wonder why mere mortals aren't 'allowed' to use it?
