Please dont be put off having a crack at making scenarios, it realy is not that difficult. I've been tinkering with scenarios and route building ofr a while and i'm just a naturally creative author when it comes to both so i dont do things on the simple side.
As Kariban said, start with something very simple and build from there. If you use youtube and search 'railworks scenario' you will find some good stuff to work with on there. Do not be scared of getting it wrong or coming to a hault not knowing why on earth a train is going down the wrong track or why the signal ahead is stuck on red.....EVERY question i have ever had on both route/scenario creation has been answered in some detail on here, and before you know it you'll be answering others questions on the same topic.
