AI ignoring signals colliding with player - WCML

Hi Folks,
First off apologies if this has been discussed before but I've had a look and cant find it.
I'm trying to make a scenario for the WCML where the players train leaves before a non-stop express to Carlisle from Glasgow. I have routed it so the player train heads off after Motherwell into a passing loop. However it often doesn't get this far as the AI express collides with the player train waiting to leave Motherwell, the signal behind the player train is at red but this seems to be ignored by the AI. If the player train is moving off from motherwell as the AI catches up it doesn't collide but stops metres from the back of the player train then the AI proceeds to crawl along.
Both the player and the AI trains are the DLC Pendolino 390 the AI train is moving with the front cab (the one where the drive and waypoints are set) at the front the player has this cab at the rear.
Is this something I have done wrong or is it a bug I'm really not sure, any help or suggestions would be greatly received.
Cheers.
