I've just started to check this out.

After amending the .xml file Iron Duke does the same i.e. smoke stops once wheels start turning. However, some smoke does issue seemingly randomly when moving off with only just enough throttle to keep the loco moving. Then, at about 30-32 mph, bingo! reasonable chuffing occurs.
