I remember Derek mentioning something a while back. The 117 could do for a 118 & with changes to power and the addition of different trailers could allow 115 & 127. The front ends would need to be changed to represent 116 & 125, as these didn't have the roof mounted headcode boxes.
For Derby units that were not High Density, the 107 & 108 were both on the shorter 57ft underframes with the 107's being about 6tons heavier per vehicle & only some of the 108's had roof mounted headcode displays. The 114 & 119 were both on the longer underframes, with the Cross Country 119 being formed DMBC-TBSL-DMSL & having a much larger brake compartment and a buffet in the trailer(later removed and used as additional luggage space on the Reading-Gatwick services). The 114 had a DMBS-DTCL formation, but the power car was fitted with a pair of 230bhp engines.

If we're gonna get onto the subject of DMUs, the 104 would be my choice. Again, useful for my Oban Line

I remember the Mexican Bean :D Noted you posted earlier about a 28 for the Oban line. Don't recall them ever being used north of Glasgow. The NBL & BRCW Type 2's were the loco's that followed on from steam on the West Highland lines.

Ah I see D12/1s as they were classified at the time, 20 examples became the Metro-Vickers Type 2 which in turn then became D12/5, which post TOPS became the Class 28.

So I was right, just wrong time period?

And yeah! The Mexican Bean, how characterful would that be eh?

Although saying that, I just read that those 20 example started off life in the Midland Region. I'm gonna have to read my C&O book by John Thomas again. Im convinced it was Co-Bo diesels used then

Second (or even third), the suggestion for 10000/10001 and 10201 - 10203.

Not strictly a diesel but maybe a 73 or 74 electro-diesel would make an interesting study.

DMU's - a thumper (possibly Hastings unit), also Class 120 Swindon Cross Country as these were fairly widespread across the network from Penzance to Inverness at one point.
