Anyone else want the class 313 (and its offspring) for RW?

Fire up your 3D modelling tool and start building some rolling stock, or find out what others are previewing here. If you have questions about how to make the blueprints work or what names mean what in models, here's the place to find out your answers.

Anyone else want the class 313 (and its offspring) for RW?

Post by v11cu196 »

Hi,
Well this being my first post I'll point out that Im not a massive rail enthusiast, but I am an occasiona PC gamer and a reasonable 3d artist who used to love trains when I was a boy.
I always loved thes 313 EMUs, along its sister classes. maybe its just because they have a face like a sad panda or something? :D
Either way I have grown up with them, so Ill be sad when they get the chop around 2012-2015.
So I figured the least I can do is imortalize them in 3d - then port the meshes over to Railworks.
I figured it they might be handy for this sim as between them, theyve covered an awful lot of routes across the UK over the past three decades.
I have done modding/import work before for Silent Hunter III (U-boat Sim), so I know its not easy, but im willing to give it a shot.

One thing I will despreatley need help with is gathering some detailed references & images for the Drivers cab, the only part of the train I cant see during my freaquent 315 journeys to work. So if anyone can point me to any such images on the web, it would be much apprieciated.

So would any one be keen on driving a 313/4/5's & 507/8's in this Sim?

I would love one, I have got a lot of documentation for the 313- for the body and cab, if that is of any use, I could scan it in, and send it to you if you are willing to make it. :D

What about this for starters, I'm sure a few more will find its way onto this thread - http://shop.makingtracks-online.co.uk/i ... 313cab.jpg

Any EMU will be very welcome in the game, thank you for your consideration.

Thanks Steve & class313, thats very handy - for now I started ont he cab exterior and body work, so right now external blue prints are essential (to the point where I dont want to continue to model without them) as I want all the proportions to be nothing short of perfect.
So yes - any blue prints/ diagram images would be really awesome :)

Thanks guys.

Cheers Frinca5, Since you drive the beast, it would be great If you could snap a few pics when you get a chance, you can probably tell me alot about the vehicles when the time comes....
What I still really need to get started is:

A front and side view photograph or diagram, if it s photo though it must be 99% on front and side and not at any angle at all - which is not easy to achieve.
Cab images.
Any good close up shots of the Panto.

Maybe some of you experts can help me identify subtle visual differences between the 313/314/315/507/508. (aside from obvious interior differences of refurbished units)
My list of observations so far: (excuse my lack of Rail terminology)

1) 315's have button operated passenger doors. (I think I'm going to ignore the 313 door handles as they were removed so early on)
2) 315's trailers are abit longer than the other units? to accommodate 2 extra horizontal seats
3) Some refurbished 315s, 507s and 508s have newer head lamp configurations, which should be easy to include.
4) The main head lamp /fog light thing is a slightly different model over the different units
5) 314s unit number is positioned slightly lower down

Not sure what else.

For Liveries I have the following in mind so far.

313
BR Blue grey / NWSE / WAGN white primer/ WAGN purple & white/ SilverLink / Southern / First Capital Connect

314
BR blue grey / Scot Rail Red & black / SPT Maroon & Cream

315
BR Blue grey/ NWSE / WAGN white primer/ WAGN purple & white/ WAGN white + yellow green stripes/ Great Eastern / ONE / National Express

507 & 508.
BR Blue grey, Silver link, Mersey Rail (Various) .....still researching this.

Thanks- had a look, seems they will ship books/drawings via snail mail, If they did some kind of electrronic format -(PDF) then I would buy.
Otherwise i got to wait days, then get the images scanned etc before I can import to 3ds max, a bit too much hassle tbh.

Class 508 - Connex South Eastern, South Eastern Yellow Doors, South Eastern Blue Doors

edit - I double checked and updated it (I wasn't sure about the yellow door se one, but found a picture

Hi,

I would love to see the 313 family of units in RW.

From a design point of view, they are stylish (for their time anyhow), cleanly designed, and ahead of their time - how can it be that the oldest 313 unit is 34 years old ?! To me they look like they're mid-80s at the earliest, and look more modern than the 317s and 455s that followed. I also think that the traction motor sound is rather distinctive - travelling on a 315 while on a day out in London immediately reminds me of all the times I've travelled on the 507/508 units on Merseyside.

Now it's "pointing out the bleeding obvious" time and something you've probably already considered: to the best of my knowledge, to cover all five classes, there are three vehicles that you'll ned to model - the driving vehicle, the panto trailer and non-panto trailer (the difference is that one says "Oh no it isn't" and the other doesn't  ). The panto trailer has three windows at one end of the vehicle, one of them fairly small, with the other two smaller/narrower than the other windows in the train. I think this has something to do with the overhead electrical equipment - naturally the 507/508s doesn't have this vehicle (just a standard non-panto trailer). However, the Merseyrail units have had some front end modifications with the light clusters.

I hope this info is of help to you, and I apologise if I've stated anything you already know, but you did say that "nothing short of perfect" is what you're after :D

Thanks, though from pictures, 3rd window on the panto trailer is exclusive to the 314 and 315 - the others dont have it.
But the non panto trailer in the 315 has extra seating so it surley must be slightly longer than its 313/508 counterpart? confusing....

Anyway I will not be builing the units as a whole, its much quicker to make cross sections, so it will be easy to clone parts and chop and change things around (at least before the UVW mapping is applied anyway.)
,then I can copy & paste & mirror sections where applicable, before stitching all there verts together. But I gotta be very precise with messurments, hence the need for some blue prints.

Hi,
v11cu196 wrote:3rd window on the panto trailer is exclusive to the 314 and 315 - the others dont have it
I stand corrected - it is only a 314/315 thing, though the 313 does have the two narrower windows (but without the 3rd window).
v11cu196 wrote:But the non panto trailer in the 315 has extra seating so it surley must be slightly longer than its 313/508 counterpart?
Nope - both trailers the same length, and the same length for all 5 classes - it'll probably be a different seating arrangement. Driving cars are 20.33m long, and both types of trailer are 19.92m. BR would never have had different length vehicles, considering the design was meant to be a standard design, where the only diffence was current collection method or region of operation. I think it was a missed opportunity that there wasn't a diesel or electro-diesel version! :D
The design can be seen to be the start of the "same basic design" philosophy that is now the industry standard. For example - 317/318/455/150, 320/321/322/456, 350/450/444/185, 357/375/377/170/172, etc, etc
