Where would I start if I wanted to make my own route? Is it something that isn't to hard to learn? Are there any tutorials to guide the way?

A good way to start is with RW-Tools and the tutorial 'Setting up a new route'. You will find both here:

Good luck

Thanks. That was easy enough.
Can I do route markers next? Or do I need to get DEM data? Does this generate terrain?

Yes, DEM data generates terrain.

Can you download DEM from the file library? I have a feeling all this will be a long learning curve.

Thanks. I'm just trying to trace over my track in Google earth so that I can make series markers. It's proving a bit difficult and seems to require a steady hand.

It must be my mouse.
How do I know which .hgt files to use for my route? Or should I just extract them all and put them all in the SRTM folder?

Ive got as far as putting in 'named markers'. Now the next step is to add the DEM data?
I'm having a bit of trouble with this. I'm pressing 'T' like crazy and no terrain is appearing

"T" does not work any more. Within the editor, on one of the left hand flyouts (top I think) there is an option to add the terrain, you can choose multiple tiles around your location.

Hi
In TS2012 you no longer press 'T'
In the World Editor, click on the big paintbrush and then the last icon on the second row of choices which then opens up a screen where you set the DEM details that you want to import.

I did it!

. I have hills
So, I have this so far:
Now I want to set up 'series markers' so that I know where to lay the track. Or is there a better way of doing this?

It all depends what you want to achieve. In reality, I find the best way is to use RWDecal (a donation secures a full licence) which will make decals and enable you to lay track very accurately. The benefit of this is that you also then have the decals in place to add the scenery as well. It's really a wonderful tool, and invaluable to a large number of route builders.
