The Dark Railway V3

Post by darkdj »

"The Dark Railway V3" is my next, and possibly last, upgrade to my "Dark Railway". The upgrade is mainly to benefirt my series, "The Dark Railway Series", and is in no way whatsoever prototypical, as far as I am aware! Ot is a personal project for the aforementioned reason.

This update is a big one, as the line has been extended Southwards from Galen Junction, as the old Mainline is now part of the Dark Railway. The line running North from Galen Junction to Raxas Heath (and beyond) and the line running south to Colhapper have been demolished, to make way for a Dual Carriageway, running along the old trackbed. The Station at Colhapper has been relocated to the Western side of the City.

After Colhapper, the line will run up to "Bramley Parkway", the junction for the "Bramley Branchline" (Also known as "The Bramley & Watford Railway"), which runs to "Collette Halt", "Bramley Central", "Parkfield Lane" and "Watford". This is owned and operated by the Dark Railway Preservation Society, and Mr Dark.

After this, we will reach "Gorton Hill", a long, steep, Four Track Gradient, allowing for slower trains to take the outside line, and faster ones to take the inside line. At the base of the hill is "Gorton Hill Works", the Dark Railway's dedicated maintainance and repair facility.

We will then reach "Racks", where there is a junction for the Racks Docks Branch, supplying Oil for the Dark Railway and local areas. The line finally arrives at the final southern terminus at Market Leyborough, where there is also a yard and MPD. Here, and at Racks, is a connection to another line, which runs off towards another mainline, and ultimately, London.

The line is now Double Tracked, has a main higher speed limit of 50, and has "Bumpy Tracks". The line now has Colour Signalling, but due to the way the Railway is run, it does not use AWS.

Here are some W.I.P. Images, so far:

Image
A Map of what has been completed, trackwise, so far. The line has been extended to rougly 30 miles, and currently stops at the base of "Gorton Hill".

Image
Revised Layout at Galen Junction, which is, ironically, not a Junction anymore! New goods yard for southbound ballast trains from Soma, and northbound goods trains from the Docks at Racks. The Dual Carriageway, which runs along the old trackbed, is visible on the right.

Image
A view of the line's Flagship Locomotive, Black Five No 45101 "Dave", exiting the yard at Galen Junction. Note the colour lights replacing the semaphores.

Image
A view of the Dual Carriageway, again, built on the old trackbed to Raxas Heath and beyond.

Image
"Dave" runs along the newly doubled line between Galen Junction and Axley.

Image
A new museum has been built at Axley, over the old engine sheds, celebrating the Railways in the area, and in particular, the work and lives of Lord Theodore R. Dark and Mr Otto Dark.

Image
A wee bit further up the line, the station at "Lake", which was once a single halt, is now a two platformed station. Unfortunately, in later years, it has become rather overgrown, but is still a request stop for passengers.

More when it comes ;)

Cheers,

Dark.

Seconded.

Gorton Hill sounds like Gordon's Hill

As I have downloaded the first version of the Dark Railway following the second Routebuilding Challenge and have the latest version, I'll get this one too.

There is actually a place in London called Gordon Hill.

Pure coincidence though.

I'm sure with 4 tracks your version will look like it as well.

Not much to report tonight, but some progress has been made on the "Bramley Branch" sector of the Dark Railway! This is located between "Colhapper West" (as the original station at Colhapper is no more, thanks to the Dual Carriageway: Network SouthEast arranged for the new station to be built with the re-allignment of the Railway.) and Gorton Hill.

The Original Bramley Branch was my first try at Routebuilding, so it has fittingly made a comeback, and is now connected to the Dark Railway!

The line has a simmilar layout, trackwise, to the Bodmin & Wenford line, with "Bramley Central" in the middle of a Y formation, with "Collette Halt" and "Bramley Parkway" to the East, and "Parkfield Lane" and "Barton Hill" to the West.

Several Engines are permeanantly rostered to this Branch, though Dark Railway engines often help out. The permeanant fleet currently includes:

Hawthorn Leslie 0-4-0ST "Parkfield"
Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST "Collette"
LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 No 46404 "Cammer"

Who, obviously, will appear in TDRS in the future.

Terrain is done, and platforms have been laid at Bramley Parkway, Collette Halt and Bramley Central. Will try and get some pics up tomorrow.

Started a wee bit of detailing on the Bramley Branch. Now that I am using the Isle of Wight and East Somerset route assets, it's looking a bit more Southern'ish.

Basically, whilst the main "Dark Railway" has been modernised, the Bramley Branch retains it's old Southern decorama.

Image
The general layout at Bramley Parkway as of tonight. There is an underpass for passengers to use, and several shelters. Not included in this shot, but there is a small goods shed located within the station, mainly for Oil Tankers and Coal Wagons to be stored before being transported up to Bramley Central for the refuelling zones.

Image
Front Enterance at Bramley Central.

Image
And finally, Bulleid Q1 No C33 "Skeeter" has just come off his train at Bramley Central. Note the Restaraunt Cars in the Bay Platform, which are a permeanant fixture of the Terminus, serving all manner of meals and snacks for visitors. In the background can just be glimpsed the old and new sheds built at the site, the old shed for the resident tank engines, and the larger, new shed for the visitors to the line, which are generally going to be rota'd onto the branch for several days at a time...

Plodding on...

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, been busy with work and TDRS!

Some new images of "Bramley Central", which is pretty much fully scenerised. Time to plod on with the rest of the line...

Image
The junction at the end of Bramley Central's straight section, the lefthand track heading back to the main "Dark Railway", via Collette Halt and Bramley Parkway, whilst the line to the right heads off to the new stations of "Parkfield Lane" and "Barton Hill". In the centre of this image is the carriage sidings.

Image
A view of Bramley Central, with the developing town in the distance.

Image
LMS Blue No 7404 "Colin"drifts into the station with a train of suburbans. The small loco facilities can be seen from here.

Image
7407 waits in the headshunt, with the station building behind.

Image
4707 again, waiting to leave the headshunt, whilst Local resident 0-4-0ST "Parkfield" waits at the head of the resstaraunt cars, which are permeanantly parked in the short and rarely used Platform 2.

Image
A final overview of the entire station, with ample parking and forest scenery.

Cracking on, and apologies for not updating so regularly, been a busy guy, what with christmas coming...

Time for an Update, I thinks...

Not must scenery done as of late, but I have plodded on with Trackwork..

So far, the new "Dark Railway" is over 40, thats right, 40 Miles Long! Not including extra sections of track, for example, the line to Racks Docks, the Bramley Branchline, Gorton Hill Works and the Sparingly used Mainline Connection. In all, I beleive that there will be at least 70 miles to explore once finished, which might not be for a long while yet, im afraid...

Anyway, a Map of Progress so far...

Image

Please note how much bigger the route is from it's origins...

There is still alot to do, such as the Mainline Connection and Dock Branch (beyond the double triangles at the bottom of above image). Not to mention signalling and speed checks!

Phew, might be here a while lads...

Not been alot of Updates to this, but it IS being worked on!

Scenery has been recompleted from Galen Junction to Axley on the down line side, as many weeds were ripped up for the redoubling of the track there.

Scenery has also begun on the section between Galen Junction and Bramley Parkway proper, unfortunately the southern section of the line remains rather bare at the moment.

Plodding on, hope to get some images up within the next few days, with luck!
