newbie question - where to get terrain?
Hi there, i'm about to set off building a route i travel along a lot, however i'm stuck at phase 1, which as far as i see it, is getting heightmap/terrain height data. How do i go about acquiring this? as im sure no one has literally manually raised/lowered every inch of terrain in all the professional routes. The tutorial links to a japanese website with some DEM (???) thing on it, but the link is broken!
Can anyone advise me on where to get the heightmap data and how to import it into railworks? I'm after UK heighmaps.

Start here...
http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/
Go to Public Data Distribution then get hgt data from the normal server or if you're doing a US route go for the bil data from the seamless server, though you will need to use a programme called ReDem to convert it for use in RW.
For the UK there's some high res hgt data in the file library here.

Re: newbie question - where to get terrain?
Ok i managed to download the ordinance survey data and put it where instructed in the tutorial>>
"DEM terrain data
Get hold of the necessary DEM data file from this site;
#####
The file should be unzipped and dropped into your DEM folder in RW."
I didnt get it from the site it mentions because it no longer exists, i got it from their official website.
However, STILL when create a route (it also wont accept my longditude variable when doing this) It just brings up an ugly muddy flat plane. Can someone help?

Hi
Welcome to the forums. DEM data is also avaible from the UKTS File Libary.

Sorry i dont understand, i followed the link, went to "Public Data Distribution". But theres no "get hgt data from the normal server" link on the page?
Re: newbie question - where to get terrain?
Yes there is. Just refer to the links in paragraph 2, you want the one to the DDS server.

What "promised" bandwidth?ChrisCrinkle wrote:

And what you need is the "A to Z" procedure to make a route.
Have a look too at RWdecal.
It's complicated, the first time.
You know: "Been there, done that"

Ok i went into the dds link and clicked on "version 1" and then into "eurasia" but theres thousands of numbered files, how do i download them all quickly, or find out which ones i need?bigvern wrote:Yes there is. Just refer to the links in paragraph 2, you want the one to the DDS server.
Re: newbie question - where to get terrain?
Whereabouts are you wanting to build? If it is the UK, this is a good tool to locate which files you would need for the UK. http://rw-trainsim.co.uk/forums/index.p ... w;down=219ChrisCrinkle wrote:Ok i went into the dds link and clicked on "version 1" and then into "eurasia" but theres thousands of numbered files, how do i download them all quickly, or find out which ones i need?bigvern wrote:Yes there is. Alternatively, the UKTS links above are more than ideal as they give you the whole country in one fellow swoop, and the quality is quite good too. Problem is, you are going to have meagre bandwidth unless you pay the small amount for premium access.

Re: newbie question - where to get terrain?
You can get you co-ordinates from google earth too go to where you want you route and find the co-ords, eg for my area around bristol you would use N51 w002, or 51 degs Lat and -2. Long
AMD A8-7650K, 64Bit win 10, 240GB SSD-TS2016,Nvidia GTX 960 2GB, 1TB HD,750W Psu, 19" AOC Monitor.

Ooh. Someone around bristol!
you may find this useful. Measure the coordinate in the bottom left corner (I think)
thanks,

- white rectangle > all of my country.
- red rectangle > region of my route only > route= see white pins
The yellow pins define the latitude and longitude of the region > one download and I have enough for my whole country.
Same for the corners of the red rectangle > but less dem-data.
It's up to you he: one time the red OR one time the white
The the latitude and longitude (numbers etc.) define your download.

Other option here:
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=118868
Using Google Earth was original and first way to build a route.

Have a look at RWDecal...but the DEM you need always he.
Same for RWTools.
